Seeking advice on schools for PreK-er and 1st grader - Relocation from Atlanta

Anonymous
I'm relocating from Atlanta over the holiday break and need advice on great schools for my kids. I have a 1st grader in the gifted program, and a PreK-er. Any advice on great schools in DC MD or VA, would be greatly appreciated.

FYI you posted this in the "VA public schools" forum, which probably isn't the best place if your question is "where should I live in VA/MD/DC for great public schools, esp. at the elementary level?"

It would help if you explained if you know where you will be living, or what you are looking for in a neighborhood beside great schools (renting or buying? approx. price range? urban or suburban? what sort of commute are you looking for, and to where?) (and, if you are interested in private schools for this year or next, you should make that clearer).

Also, there is a lot of info. in the forum archives, if you poke around.

In VA, the following high school pyramids are good (roughly in the order they appear in various US News etc. rankings): McLean and Langley in McLean, Yorktown and Washington-Lee in Arlington, Madison in Vienna, and Woodson in Fairfax. We recently moved because of schools and are now in Haycock/Longfellow/McLean pyramid. It may be a good fit for you because Haycock is a GT center and has a great reputation. You didn't say what your housing budget is which could eliminate some of these.

Yes, housing budget is huge.

Just FYI, in FCPS, the GT program does not start until third grade. Before then, some schools do a much better job differentiating for children than others, so that is something to keep in mind.
