preschool waitlist

Have a question about waitlists. Just applied to two part-time programs at preschools for my child in the 2s range. Not alot of them out there, but thought it might be something nice for him to try. Also, figured could do alot of research and early planning for the following year for a threes program if he did not get in this coming year. Anyway, he was waitlisted at this school, they do no interviews, etc and don't see all that interested in recommendations etc which sounded very reasonable for children this small. BUt they do have a preference for siblings. They do state there may be attrition before the next school year and there could be movement on the waitlist. My question is it appropriate to contact them to see where on the waitlist the child might be? If it's a high number, could probably put out of mind till the next application process, but if low then might think differently. Also, how common are waitlists and how genuine with preschools, meaning do they put everyone on or is it a real waitlist, they will accept your child if room opens up?

It varies a lot by school. Could you ask a prent who's already there, or post the name of the school?

I think it's fine to call the school and ask how likely it is a spot will open up. Is he number one on the list or 25? You're just asking for general information...

It's perfectly reasonable to call and inquire where you are on the waitlist, especially if you are considering another preschool.

I was told that the waitlists at a lot of preschools start to move after the deadline for putting down the first month's tuition. That was my experience--after that May 1st date passed, the preschools where my son was waitlisted were calling offering spots.

Good luck!
