We've been in Seattle four years now and find the city much more affordable than DC with a few caveats. The Eastside (Bellevue, Redmond, etc.) is comparable to the expensive areas of DC. HHI of $400K+ would be necessary to be comfortable there. Other areas, like North Seattle where we live, is much more reasonable at $150k+. We make comparative salaries to DC ($275k) and live in a beautiful house overlooking the Puget Sound. The commute is very easy, kid activities are affordable, and the quality of life is great. People have a great work life balance and rarely discuss work here. It's an awesome, safe place to raise a family.
