Ok my oldest is just getting into the stage where I need to learn a few things...I've figured out some of them (please correct me if I'm wrong)

URM=underrepresented minority
SLAC=small liberal arts college
CTCL=colleges that change lives (small...colleges?)

I dont' know:

ORM
what the importance of the yeild is...

and a bunch of other abbreviations. If you could just point me to a link, (or post a list here) I'd appreciate it!

Thank you

ORM -over represented minority who won’t get a college admission break like a URM (Hispanics, blacks, first to college, states underrepresented like North Dakota, etc)

Importance of yield -low yield means most accepted candidates picked a different school, normally a better school (not all the time if fit of program is what u r after than school ranking)

Some colleges may try to "protect their yield" by rejecting highly qualified candidates whom they think will not ultimately enroll --- instead preferring to accept students more likely to choose their school because it's the student's best/first choice.

Go hang out on College Confidential. Read. Read. Read.

If you want to learn more about CTCL, see their website:

https://ctcl.org/about/

They do excellent talks around the country. Bring your child. Even if their schools are not for you/your child, their approach to the whole college search is very healthy.
