mast cell cancer in a Boston terrier

Thinking of adopting an older dog that really needs a home. I've had other dogs with medical issues, so that doesn't scare me. This dog has had surgery and the vet thinks he's good for however many years he has. He is 7. Is this a largely treatable cancer?

Our Boxer has had two mast cells removed and they’ve been grade 1 so NBD. Unfortunately they cannot tell the grade until they are removed. I assume the rescue group will pay for the surgery?

Bostons are amazing. We’ve had two and they’ve both lived until age 14. We miss having one so much.

Sorry I just reread. Find out what grade the tumors were but given the report sounds like NBD. More may pop up but I would almost think of them like pre cancerous moles on a person. Take care of them quickly and they don’t cause an issue.

Grade 1 tumors are largely treatable once removed. Grades 2 and 3 have more poor prognosis especially if they have spread. If your vet has looked at the medical records and feels like the tumor has been removed it should be okay.

Our rescue had a mast cell tumor. We caught it early.

I hate to jinx it by typing it but: we are 5 years out with not return of it. She was fine! Surgery was fine. Just a bit groggy and sore for a couple of days.

Thanks, all. I lost a dog a couple of years ago to an insidious cancer, with almost no good prognosis, but I know that not all cancers are the same thing.

We removed a mast cell tumor from our 8 year old Boston. He recovered quickly and at 11 now, he is a happy and healthy boy. Bostons are so full of love and joy - go for it!
