If a recipe calls for vegetable oil can I use butter instead?

The recipe calls for 2 tbsp of vegetable oil. Would I use 2 tbsp melted butter?

it depends on what you're using it for. vegetable oil has a higher smoking point than butter. therefore, say the recipe is telling you to put oil and heat on high in a pan for searing... your butter will burn if you sub it there.

It's for a cake.

Since butter has a different melting point, it might make for a drier cake than oil.

I'd find a recipe that uses butter instead of oil, if that's an option.

I think for a cake you'd be fine, especially if it is only 2 tbs.

You can use olive oil if you have it.

If it is for baking you can also substitute oil for apple sauce.

No, don't use olive oil in a cake. It will taste funny.

Vegetable oil is 100% fat. Butter is 80% fat and 10% water. You can substitute, but you'll need to use a little bit extra butter.

You can substitute applesauce for the oil.
