Handmaids tale-why is the lighting so dark sometimes?

Anonymous
Literally can't see some scenes because The screen lighting is so dark? It's annoying!

I hadn't noticed that with THT, but I have watched (or tried to watch) movies on Netflix that are so dark it's like watching a blank screen. Agree -- annoying.

Cinematic effects: dark equals evil, dreary, hopeless

Do you have a high definition TV? Shows look better on them.

I usually adjust the screen settings on my tv to watch it in a brighter mode.

Just had a conversation about this with my sister who binge watched it last weekend.(And loved it-so fun to have a conversation about it again!) I thought it was just me because I watch on an Ipad. So annoying!

I hate shows and movies that are too dark. It seems like an arrogant decision by a director where their "art" is more important than consideration of viewers.

+1 GOT was like this too and it was so annoying.

Yes the same with volume of conversations. I can understand something was said in a whisper without it actually having to be so low it can't be heard. Always use subtitles now.

I do, too. DH calls me an old lady, but he’s the one always asking “What did he just say?” I don’t have that problem!

Movies have gone "dark" for over a decade. It's annoying.

I literally thought I was losing my vision when watching it.

I can't watch so much stuff on the airplane because it's all so dark. In that environment where focusing is hard in the first place, I'm like forget it.

I don't understand how Hitchcock was able to somehow evoke a mood without having it so dark.

This is technically more about the lack of color in movies and shows as opposed to dark lighting, but a really interesting article:

https://www.vox.com/platform/amp/culture/22840526/colors-movies-tv-gray-digital-color-sludge

)And PS +1 to the grumble about properly recording actors speaking. Makes me crazy because I see it as part of the job of making filmed entertainment, not an artistic choice you can play around with. Endlessly frustrating.)
