Ugh! I just caught our house guest...

drinking straight from the gallon of milk in the fridge. Yuck! He knows I saw him do it but neither of us said anything. What would you have done? (He is my much younger BIL, if that makes a difference).

who cares

gross!!!

I have one of those much younger BILs who lived with us most of the summer and spring and I am almost sure that (and probably worse) was going on at our house, as well.

I wouldn't have said anything, then thrown the milk away in the morning. That's kind of a classic BIL thing to do, isn't it.

I would have told him, in the moment, to never do that again. But, since you missed that, tell him next time it's just the two of you that you'd appreciate it if he didn't do that again. What's the big deal with saying something to him?

b/c telling a house guest to "never do something again" is pretty harsh. why piss off a member of the family? if it grosses you out then just throw it away, and maybe ask your husband to tell his bro ...

Write his name on it with a black marker and make him finish it.

"Never do it again" or something not so harsh with the same sentiment. It's her BIL, not a regular houseguest IMO. Maybe our family is more direct than others.

why not, next time you catch him in the act, use some humor? Like "oh no you did NOT just drink straight from the carton. Don't do that, bro! Nobody wants your cooties!" If you buy new milk or not is up to you.
Anonymous
Gross! Yes -- I think humor is the way to go. "Ew! BIL! Okay, that gallon is yours now. Can you use a cup from now on?"

Thank God it was only about milk. I thought you caught him being "master of his domain."

I thought the same thing!

Who cares about the milk? I am very positive my brother does the same thing when he stays over. We're all family.

Germs are germs though. It's cold and flu season. It's just inconsiderate, and frankly, obnoxious. Get a glass and pour the milk. I really don't like drinking after anyone else, and I realize it's not the end of the world, agree that OP has the right to be peeved. Don't think she was going to break ties with BIL for the rest of their life.

FWIW, I wouldn't have said anything but would not have let my kids drink out of the milk and I wouldn't have either.

Just be glad you didn't accidentally walk in on him doing naked yoga in your living room, bent over from a standing position with butt cheeks facing you. "Oh, I didn't think you'd get up so early," she said.

i never did understand naked yoga...
