Eastern Middle School

We recently attended an open house at Eastern Middle School. Can anyone speak to their experience at this school? How is the principal. She is new, and I wasn't all that impressed with her at the open house, but I recognize that that little snippet might not be a good reflection of her whole picture. One parent at the open house asked about high bullying, school violence and drinking rates as reflected in a student survey. Are these really problems at school? How is the relationship between students in the comprehensive program and the magnet program? Is there a school within a school feel? Is that good or bad?

The magnet program is wonderful. My daughter just started her last year there. Yes, there is always a school within a school feel in the magnet programs I think. I haven't dealt with the new principal at all, but don't have any problems with her. Can't say enough good about the magnet program!!!

Are they having middle school open houses already? I was just wondering when we had to get those on the schedule.

A friend's daughter is in the Eastern magnet and loves it. Great program. But she also says she has serious safety concerns about the school and that it is "rough." (I am actually toning down her safety-related comment.) FWIW.

I don't have direct experience with it, so take this FWIW. But my son has friends in the program, and they report that the magnet programs are great but other programs, such as science and math, are less good.

Also, a year or two ago there was a lot of DCUM traffic about the 8th period class being eliminated, so that kids had fewer electives. You could do a DCUM search to look for this.
