Infertility Support and Discussion

I just joined the TWW club today after my first IUI. I have a short luteal phase so assumed if no pregnancy would get AF before two weeks up - "less than two weeks" sounded easier to wait out. However I was given Prometrium to take vaginally (starting Saturday). I didn't know to ask this at dr's office but after some web reading tonight see that I may not get AF while on it. So I guess will have to wait for two weeks to test at RE's office. Have others had this experience?
Also seems that a lot of people get side effects on Prometrium. True for others? Thanks! |
I think that in most cases (including myself) you will not start your period while you are on Prometrium. I was on it after my first IUI and was very bloated the entire time. I also had some pink spotting. Good luck!
I did not have any side effects---other than annoyance at the white goopy mess----honestly, these progesterone inserts are like having a constant yeast infection. My first IVF was negative, and after stopping the prometrium the day the test came back negative, I got my period either the next day or day after.
OP here - thanks for the information, very helpful!

The most important thing to know about prometrium is that it can give you side effects that will make you think you are pregnant when you are not - like cramping, sore breasts, headaches, bloating, etc. I didn't learn this until my third cycle, and even then it was hard to psych myself out of believing that I may be pregnant when I knew that it was likely just the prometrium.
Oh - the one side effect that did not make me believe I was pregnant was an ichy butt, which some women get from the prometrium coming out. |
I've taken Prometrium twice and both time it did not allow me to have AF until AFTER I stopped taking the suppositories when I found out I got a BFN. I got my period two days after I stopped taking it. And yes, I agree with another poster that Prometrium will mimick pregnancy symptoms so be aware...just a little advice, its better to just go about the 2ww as if these weeks were just a normal part of life (I know easier said than done!) instead of stressing over every symptom you feel or don't feel. Blame it all on the prometrium. Good luck!
I also have a short luteal phase (usually 10 days of elevated temperatures when doing BBT) and I also did not get AF until after I stopped the progesterone inserts. I did have some very light spoting the last couple days of the 2WW (both cycles were BFNs). Good luck surviving the 2WW and I hope you get good news!!!
laughing at 22:17 post about the goopy mess -- i hated those suppositories so much i actually asked for the IM shots in the butt instead and i was SO much happier to deal with one shot a day (as opposed to 3 inserts) and no mess. made a world of difference, to me, in the 2WW. and, yes, the progesterone definitely mimics preg sysmptoms.
I agree with PP, though I think they are referring to Endometrin, rather than Prometrium, which is what the OP is asking about. I have been on both and found Endometrin to be MUCH worse with all the white goop. Prometrium wasn't that bad.
OP again - well looks like I have a lot to look forward to Sat (gulp)..... Thanks for all the well wishes.
