Should my daughter wear white or black shoes for Easter? I am not from U.S. so there are some things I just don't get.....and I have been told that this is an issue but not the answer.
We are invited to a special Mass and I would like to get this 'right' out of respect to those who invited us... so please no responses that she should just wear whatever I prefer! |
most girls I see at church wear white shoes if their dress is white, or very light in color, which is traditional. |
I think it's more a matter of personal taste but...I grew up getting my new pair of "maryjanes" in black for Easter Mass--we are Catholic. |
I love black patent leather mary janes with white tights and dresses. I'm not a big fan of white shoes until summer - though little girls look adorable in anything!

I think Easter is too early this year fro white shoes- look too summery |
Cute question. |
OP - it used to be that you did not wear white until after Memorial Day and then stopped around Labor Day..or some similar timeframe. However, this is no longer viewed so stringently. I was raised Catholic and I don;t think anyone would blink at a little girl dressed in her Easter 'best' wearing either black or white shoes. Have a nive time. |
Let me start with a disclaimer: I was raised to think that white shoes only existed for nurses and people with poor taste. (my Mom was, um, a little rigid, maybe?) I've long ago recognized that my mom is a freak and that "what to wear" to church is sort of secondary (since God really doesn't care), but I still probably have a bias towards black shoes for little girls, which I think would be totally appropriate for Easter, esp if they're black patent leather.
Ultimately, it really doesn't matter. If I were you, I'd get what was most readily available, and what she'd most likely use again. I have to ask: why are the people who are posing this dilemma for you not able/willing to give you any guidance? That's kinda mean, IMO. Are they just messing with you, you think? |
If you get black patent leather, spend a few extra bucks to get the ones with the soft sole that are comfy. I got some like that for my dd and she was able to wear them every day (after the event) to school and they held up well. |
White is from Easter until Labor Day. I don't think I have seen one girl at mass wearing black shoes, and that is at a collection of churches. I think it really boils down to what your DD is wearing, would it look better with white shoes, or with black. |
The white shoe rule is from Memorial Day to Labor Day EXCEPT on Easter Sunday. When I was growing up, little girls usually wore white shoes to our very middle class catholic church, but I'm sure things have changed. |
I grew up in NY with a mother from Manhattan who knew and practiced all of the shoe rules.
Traditionally: White and patten leather only from Memorial Day to Labor Day with Easter as an exception. |
I was in a shoe store this morning and thought of you folks. There were just as many white shoes as black shoes for sale. Plus a row of pink and a row of multicolored. |
It depends on where you grew up. In the south, it's easter until labor day - black patent leather on easter day itself. In the North (including here), it's memorial day until labor day. |
Either. But IMHO shiny black leather shoes are the cutest with a pair of white tights! |
