I was able to get DC vaccinated for H1N1 today. The thing is that they are recommending two doses for children under nine. What is the possibility that the second dose will be available in a month? Otherwise, the first dose is ineffective. Just a thought . . .
The first dose is NOT ineffective - it offers PARTIAL protection against the virus, but they need 2 doses for full effectiveness. Getting one shot is better than not getting any. That said, the nurse at my pediatrician's office said people may or may not be able to get a second dose - it all depends on supply. The best thing is to get the first one as soon as possible, so that whenever a second dose is available, your child can get it.
DD got first dose today too. We are just going to have to be vigilent in finding a second dose.
OP here- thanks for this info. I hope no one yells at me for being greedy about the shot. I realize we are fortunate to have the first one : ) |
My hope is that in a month, pediatricians' offices will have it and it will be easier. Crossing fingers!
I had been wondering the same thing. There are dates for all these clinics but no mention of the second shot. Good to know having one provides partial protection, so we may as well get one and see what happens in a month.
