I moved to MD earlier this year and, in order to register my car and get tags, I had a full inspection for my car in mid June. I recently received a MD vehicle inspection notice, due late September. I am a bit confused. Why am I getting this notice less than 3 months after undergoing a full i soection, which presumably includes an emission test? Is the full inspection from mid June independent from this emission inspection?
On the back of the notice, there is a waiver option if "vehicle was previously tested in the past year." It asks for a certificate number and a "valid thru" date. Should I get that info from the place that conducted the full inspection of my car and send the from to MD MVA? Thanks. |
| ^^ I meant in the second sentence: i recently received a MD vehicle *emission* inspection notice... |

Emissions are done separately from a vehicle inspection in MD. Inspections only have to be done once at time of purchase but emissions are every two years I think.
The 'full inspection' certificate would not meet the emissions inspection requirement I don't think. |

Inspection done by private places, emission done by state.
Tip: there are 24-hour self-service emissions kiosks. One is as the main MVA office in Gaithersburg. I take our cars in odd hours like weekends or evening when there's no traffic. |
| My inspection period ends on 29 September 2021 and I have not received a Vehicle Inspection Notice. How do I obtain one? |
In MD, you only do vehicle inspection once, but emissions are every two years. |
| Full inspection did not include emissions inspection. |

The rest of the replies basically answer the question but I'll reply anyway.
When you move to the state, you must do a vehicle safety inspection which requires someone at a shop to inspect the vehicle and repair as needed. Many states have annual safety inspections. Maryland does not have an annual inspection. You only do it once, when bringing the car into the state from out of state. Once you have your car inspected, you can register it i in Maryland. Maryland has an emissions inspection that is done every other year (many other states also have this per federal regulations). Once your car is registered (also every other year when the registration is renewed), you will have to take it to an emissions inspection station. Basically, all you do is get your car in line, wait until it's your turn, then get out. They plug your car's computer into their machine to make sure it's operating normally then you pay some nominal fee and leave. |
Good summary. I’ve lived in Maryland forever and didn’t get all of this until I bought a used car at a dealer in Jersey, and then he explained it completely wrong and I had to go to MVA twice to do everything in the right order. |
