Dude, we have zero proof she ever even visited Spain growing up. Her mom was beginning her career as a doctor and her dad was a busy lawyer. They have no family in Spain. If they ever "vacationed" there it was probably once. That's like an 18+ hour flight. Mallorca is an island. You can't just fly directly from Laguardia to Mallorca's airport.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with breastfeeding, same as there is nothing wrong with having a bowel movement. It’s just kind of unnecessary to post a photo of that. We are all aware how breastfeeding works. Boob out brushing teeth, how contrived.

Sorry no. Totally different. It's not something that automatically happens. There really isn't an equivalent thing. If I decide not to poop one day, whatever, I can poop tomorrow. To breastfeed you have to continually express milk and can't skip days.

Also, I doubt that anorexic woman can breastfeed. Calorie restriction was the #1 killer of breast milk.

True. But she did learn some pretty authentic-sounding Spanish somewhere. I only hear her speaking for a bit on a video but it sounded convincingly Spanish (from Spain). I’d be curious to know if she could sustain her Spanish for a longer conversation...I’ve only seen short clips.

She did vacation in Mallorca as a kid (every summer+); her family had a house there (her grandparents also lived there when she was younger), which her parents have now retired to. Her brother also lives there. She speaks Spanish fluently. None of this is to defend her. It is super creepy that she pretends to be Spanish when she is not, but she does have actual links to the country.

Well, IMHO, there are varying degrees of cultural appropriation. Some degree of cultural appropriation is completely normal and natural (that's why we have delicious varieties of fusion food, creole languages, and shared holidays around the world).

It's the lack of acknowledgment that's the problem. If you say (or let it be said) that you ARE Spanish, and then you profit from pantomiming your Spanish-ness to the media, that's also problematic. What you should do instead is say "I'm American, but I grew up going to Spain, I really love the culture, I"m going to teach my kids Spanish, we're going to vacation there, etc." Look how much credit Bradley Cooper got in the media for speaking French so well (he studied abroad in France in college)! That approach, if Hilaria Baldwin had chosen to take it, would have generated much more goodwill.

In the case of Hilaria Baldwin, it's hard to make the case that anyone's being hurt (except possibly her children when they find out that their "Spanish" mother really wasn't). But what she's doing is creepy, because she's lying or being deliberately opaque about her background.
