I agree. Increasingly I feel the explanation for the weird PR cannot be related to her health because there simply would not be a reason for this level of cover up. Say she has a semi-embarrassing issue like a colostomy bag and wants to keep it private. Totally understandable! They could do the whole "abdominal surgery" thing and protect her medical privacy, but still post some ACTUAL photos of her from the shoulders up so that people see that she's doing okay. She could even make some kind of video appearance for something (literally pick any of her charities or pet subjects and just have her record a short video congratulating someone or with a PSA on an issue), all without disclosing the specific condition. Even if she is looking unwell -- they have teams of hair and makeup people, they could make her look well enough for a photo or short video.

If it was something much more serious like a coma or a stroke, it would make no sense to try and cover it up (unless it was actually due to an act of violence committed by another member of the family, which still sounds like a crazy theory to me) -- there would be a huge outpouring of support for her if her condition was disclosed. And something like that is bound to come out later anyway, so there's just no reason to try and keep it hidden. At least not for this long -- it would be one thing to hush it up for a week or something so the family could acclimate and to create a game plan for the kids, but for months? It doesn't make sense.

I am starting to buy the divorce or separation rumors, because that would explain why all the weirdness and conflicting stories. I just don't see how a genuine health concern results in the present situation. If it turns out she really just had a pre-planned abdominal surgery and is at home happily recovering with her family, none of this makes any sense.

I agree with all of this. I’m leaning towards the dissolution of their marriage as well. It will be a PR nightmare of epic proportions, considering what it stands for, as the son of Diana. I don’t think they know how to navigate what is happening and are panicking. The “surgery” stalled them (it may or may not have happened), then the announcement of the recovery until April bought them some time, then Charles took one for the team and diverted attention, twice actually, now the picture, which was supposed to hold people over for the month. Only it didn’t work and now they are out of time. I will be curious to see if anything happens tomorrow, especially after today’s wild speculations.

The problem is that there have been several extremely weird events in the interim. William's odd public appearances. His last minute absence from the memorial service. And now this bizarre photo posted the same week as someone who looks a lot like Kate was seen in a car with Carole Middleton. It doesn't add up.

There's also the fact that if Kate just had a planned surgery and wanted a long recovery time, they literally could have just said that. In the last 18 months, QEII passed, they had the funeral which was a huge ordeal, then the family planned and executed the coronation which involved a lot of public events and commitments. They could have just said that Catherine is using the forced leave of absence due to surgery to take a slightly longer R&R and spend some private time with her children and family before resuming public duties. I actually think if they'd just been explicit that she needed a break after a very eventful year and a half, most people would be fine with it and have moved on. It's a few months and it's not like she's the Prime Minister. Being a mom (and raising the 1st/2nd/3rd in line to the throne) kind of is her main job, so taking some time off to be with her kids instead of going to flower shows and hospital openings is fine.

This truly is a problem of the palace's own making. You can't be mostly vague but then insist on a few very specific details, get super defensive when challenged at all, and then do stuff like release this weirdly doctored photo. They can actually get plenty of privacy, especially around medical issues, but they do have to provide some kind of believable explanation to the press and the public because when all they offer is nonsensical, people will of course speculate.

Actually, I think you are being dismissive of the extreme conspiracy theories. They announced her surgery and gave her return date - and people didn't accept it. With Charles' diagnosis of cancer, it's not great timing. But the public has gone absolutely crazy over Kate, speculating that she is in a coma on TV, divorcing, dead, etc. You're minimizing the public frenzy over her "disappearance" and pretending that the way her medical treatment was handled was problematic when it was handled exactly the way you described it should have been.

A theory is that Will put out the photo himself, without her consent (and it was either old or she was photoshopped into it). Her side called the press and told them it was unauthorized.

That makes A LOT of sense and explains why AP took drastic measures.

+1, if the subject of the photo came out and told them "this is a fake photo," it would make the kill order make sense. Especially in the era of AI, because even if in this case it was a photo that was badly doctored without the knowledge/consent of the subject, the AP and other agencies would be especially careful of not publishing something inauthentic. I guarantee all these agencies have had people try to sell them AI-generated and heavily photoshopped images already, and that they are still figuring out how to handle that. The last thing they need in this moment is to be publicly called out for printing a photo of a public person AND HER CHILDREN that was spliced or doctored without the consent of anyone in the photo, including the minors.
