Yes, Pretty Woman is problematic. But I have other movies that are made even know that are still awful for women. Don’t even get me started on those that don’t pass Bechdel. Also how many movies do I have to watch about war or sports or hobbits/fantasy, ones that are blockbusters that have hardly any real parts or stories about women in them. It gets old.

The word "problematic" itself is becoming problematic.

It's still very entertaining and definitely a touchstone of the 90s. It also couldn't possibly be made today with so much attention on human trafficking.

I kinda find it hard to believe that ur parents were cool with you watching that scene on the piano in the hotel bar...at nine. Did they race for the fast-forward button???

DP I watched it around that age too and also didn't know what a prostitute was. Watched it at a sleepover with parents who didn't care. Don't think I mentioned it to my own parents.

No. Not a Disney story, which were mainly adapted from other stories.

PW was distributed by Buena Vista, which is a Disney company. Disney studios actually struggled during this time, PW was a lifesaver for them.

Every woman dreams of this scenario--except maybe butchy lesbians.

Because many people love to see a rags-to-riches, Cinderella type story.

In this case, a poor + uneducated girl has to be a hooker in order to support herself.
She lives in a dump and does not even own her own car.

Enter handsome, wealthy Prince Charming.
He is her ticket out of her dark existence & will offer her a brand-new life where she can improve her life for good.

It's just a grown up version of Cinderella or sleeping beauty or pride and prejudice

Because every little girl dreams of a Cinderella princess 👸🏽 existence.

We all want the ultimate Fairy Tale.

To have our own knight in shining armor who will come to rescue us & take us to live happily. Ever. After. ✨🌈

Ya’ll need to dig deeper. It’s not Cinderella, where the only change was clothing and station. It’s a My Fair Lady story in that she is taught how to fit in with high society.

Our dream is that we help somebody be all they can be and they do the same for us.

We both help each other become better people.

That is what the movie is about.

It’s just too bad this “wholesome” Cinderella story has a hooker as female lead. Otherwise I might let my DD watch it. Why couldn’t she have been down and out in some other way?
