Absolutely THIS.

White America owes each and every Black Person of Color alive today $59.6 million dollars, to account for the lost of generations of family wealth from the time of slavery to the present. 400 years of slavery.

More free stuff, eh?

Not free. Paid for by the blood of Africans since 1500 AD and counting.

I was just reading more deeply about Arab traders role in the slave trade
Perhaps take this up with the Saudis when their oil starts selling again?

If you are against reparations because they are "free stuff," then I assume you're for a 100% estate tax? That money is owed from real, actual work performed that was not paid for. If you are against people being paid for outstanding debts owed to their ancestors because they aren't the specific people who did the work, I see no logical reason you could be for people being paid an inheritance from their ancestors when they were not the specific person who earned the money.

I am for the estate tax. But reparations validate wallowing in a victimhood mentality.

You're for a 100% estate tax? No inheritances, no wealth transfer whatsoever? Because getting money you didn't earn just validates wallowing in an entitlement mentality.

At the time, liberals were beating their breasts about how terrible it was. They said Safeway was too expensive for the neighborhood, which was then overwhelmingly black. They said it was the vanguard of gentrification, and that it would push out black people and all the whites would come in.

Fast forward to today, and gentrification is far worse today than it was then. But the difference this time, is that no one cares. Liberals not only don't talk about gentrification, they are forceful advocates FOR gentrification. They don't call it that. Now they call it "increasing density" but it's the same thing (back when they still called it gentrification, developers knew they could make a lot more money if only they could build condos everywhere but the city wouldn't let them).

Now the liberals sound like the developers and no one cares about all the black and brown people being pushed out. This story says it's a bigger problem here than anywhere else.

It's funny how much the politics have changed. Opening a grocery store in Petworth used to be hugely controversial. Now white liberals make no bones about how they want to push minorities out of the city.

Don’t forget the role of Africans in enslaving and selling other Africans. How shall they pay reparations?

I never understand this argument.

Reparations people: Modern-day Americans are still benefiting from the results of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
You: Well, Africans were involved in the trans-Atlantic slave trade too, so there, ha!

What about the descendants of the Africans who profited from the enslavement, mistreatment and sale of other Africans? Haven’t they benefitted from the deplorable human trafficking by their ancestors?

Why are you yelling at me about breaking the lamp? Larla was involved in the lamp-breaking too!

(In the bigger picture - please explain how modern-day Africans are benefiting from the results of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.)

It doesn’t matter. No one who isn’t a huge racist with ulterior motives denies that the US Federal Government wronged enslaved Africans. All this whataboutism nonsense with Arab and African slave traders is a pathetic and transparent attempt to distract from that reality. Don’t engage with them as if they were arguing in good faith.

So who would get reparations? Descendants of Caribbean Africans? Would mixed-race individuals get half, or less, of a reparations share? Should someone have to prove that they are descendants of slaves? And WTF exactly does this have to do with gentrification in DC? After all, African-Americans moved into neighborhoods that had once been predominantly Irish, Italian or European Jewish immigrant.
