The question is why such a tiny percentage of commuters should have such a big say over our infrastructure. |

Okay. Even the real data is unimpressive. Cycling realistically only works for a small minority of commuters. |
And those numbers are obviously wrong. I must see a couple thousand people each morning on my way, on the subway, walking, in cars, buses. Call it 2,000 people. Five percent of that is 100 cyclists. I don't see 100 people on bikes in a month. The census figures are based on interviews, and people are clearly exaggerating how often they ride their bikes to work. |
I rarely bike commute, but I still don't want to build 10-story parking garages at union station, FFS. I want less car traffic to make it safer and nicer for pedestrians, and to reduce carbon emissions. |
you must not live near union station. you know, where this parking would go. I see dozens of people on bikes on my short walk to the metro. and, the point is we want more people on bikes. again, if you want to never get out of your car, stay in the burbs. union station is not for you. |
| If I'm correct, a number of the vehicles that park in the current Union Station garage are tour buses. I'd rather provide a place for them to park in a Metro and rail accessible location, within walking distance to Capitol Hill and several museums, which is what the station location offers. The alternative is buses that circle, double park and idle on DC streets. |

As a neighbor of Union Station, I would prefer less parking spaces so that there may be any kind of reduction in commuter traffic from MD driving like maniacs through my neighborhood on weekday mornings.
I doubt that many people drive to Union Station to then pay for parking while they travel to New York. Most likely they would cab/Uber to the station, especially for business travel. For leisure travel, they would be saving money by metroing or just DRIVE to NYC in the first place. |
Yeah - did you go outside today? The busses are STiLL on the streets instead of in the parking lot. |
Former area resident here. Other uses for the garage parking not mentioned yet include a car rental agency, super convenient. Our neighbors would also move a car there before a big storm so they didn't have to shovel out, which us also a nice perk to having some additional parking. IMHO, the goal should be multi-modal transportation, and maximizing choice and flexibility, not one form over another.

You know what would make biking work for more trips for more people? A useful network of protected bike lanes. Saying we shouldn't have bike lanes because few people bike is like saying we shouldn't have a bridge over a river because few people drive across the river - except that people actually do ride on hostile, dangerous roads. Imagine how many more people would ride if they had comfortable, safe bike routes. |
