Not true. The majority of the Johnson Scholars at W&L are white and those students are a far greater proportion of the student body than the black students. Right now at W&L there are fewer than 100 black students on campus (out of aprrox 1800). Most of the kids on need based aid at W&L are white. |
Obviously, a 7-figure gift gets the university's attention, but I think they also look at consistency of giving over the years. I've been on an advisory board of a competitive law school, and the number of alumni who give, much less consistently over a long period of time, is lower than you might think. There are only 3 colleges in America (Princeton is #1 and HYS are not in the top 10) that have over 50% participation, and it drops off pretty quickly from there. |
PP. maybe - but we gave one gift in 20+ years. i think people are mistakenly conflating legacy and development. |
