Guard dog that is great with kids?

Anonymous
Our smooth (short-haired) Collie fits this description. He's very protective but also devoted to the kids. Sometimes too much so, in that they don't always appreciate being herded, but he keeps them safe. Once our youngest managed to open the side door and wander into our neighbor's back yard (he was two and change at the time) and the dog never left his side. He wasn't out there long before we discovered him, but I was grateful for the protection.

I used to believe that Labs are just fantastic with kids, and they are, the problem is that sometimes some of them are not. I started following media nad within the last decade there was a lot of horrible accidents with labs and kids. Just very unfortunate.
The same with German Shepherds.
Hence my belief that it is good to have a small companion dog for kids who will be great alert dog that will make plenty noise to scare someone away and alarm adults if and as needed but in general dogs should be always supervised and kids should be educated what is okay and what is not okay comes to playing with dogs. However, the smaller the dog the less damage in any case.
People will advise you plenty.

I am not entirely familiar with this breed but my neighbor has two of them, often roaming back yard, you can not see the dogs due to high fence but for a long time I was sure he has German shepherds or some other GIGANTIC breed because they bark so low and so loud. It was amazing, what a cool trick.
I would assume they must be also adorable.

As to Labs and such you might want to research more.

I'll bet dollars to donuts that was a "lab mix" which they call basically every dog they can't identify. No way that was a purebred lab that hadn't been abused.

Labs have been responsible for 9 fatalities from 2005 to 2017. They've also been the most popular dog breed in the US for 27 years straight. I guess people can decide for themselves if those odds are frightening.

Purebreds?

Great Dane - great with kids/family. They look and sound horrifying to 'bad guys' or the mailman, but they're actually usually total wusses. They do shed, though.

Totally agree about Poodles. They are great dogs.

We chose an unconventional one - American Eskimo. They were bred to guard and for companionship. They will most definitely bark at anything but can be easily trained to stop when told to stop.

We have miniature and despite being small her bark is loud. They are excellent for alerting you but are not aggressive with anyone.

They are stand-offish with strangers. That’s something I prefer because I don’t really want a dog who has to socialize with every dog in the world. I like to get on with my day and be in charge of our agenda. Which is what they like and need. They must have someone who keeps the lead. They are smart enough to try to quietly usurp you!

They get along great with children, except young ones who might grab and squeeze. They usually get along with cats.

They are highly intelligent and learn fast. They however do not like to be alone. (They will bond with everyone in the family.) And they cannot be put outdoors alone.

The huge coat of fur looks high maintenance but while they need to be brushed twice a week they should only be bathed 2-4 times a year or their skin gets irritated.

When I met DH, he had a Newfie. They really are gentle giants, but when they do bark, they are LOUD. And as sweet and calm as they are, 150 pounds of dog is a lot of dog. They shed like crazy, too.

+ 100 gentle, playful, and loving yet a protector with a good, loud bark!!

German Shepherd obvi! But if you have time to dedicate and want more guard, less bark check out rhodesian ridgebacks.

I should add the Rhodesian ridgebacks are known for protecting their owners from lions in Africa, but not attacking said lions.

We had a mastiff who was amazing with our kids, but I constantly worried about strangers.

And we have a ridiculous golden doodle who is plenty loud and aggressive sounding from behind the door.

There really is no such thing as the magic dog you are looking for.
