What is with people consistently calling their kids by both first and middle name?

There were 2 children with my son's name in his 2's class and they ended up calling my son by his first and middle name to distinguish them. It stuck and since the preschool is our community thats what the kids and parents call him. I call him just by his first name at home, but if we are in the presence of the other kid I call him his first and middle name. He has mostly dropped it now that he's in elementary school. I have always wondered if people were judging us because it sounds very formal. Now I know they were!

In italy and spain, also somewhat common. I knew a Miguel Angel who was always called that. (Not the famous sculptor, also Michel Angelo.)

Those aren't first + middle names though. Those are first names that are two names. Like 80% of the Latin American world names their females Maria + something.

My kid is two first names and a separate middle.

Trivia: Paul McCartney's actual name is James Paul McCartney. His parents called him Paul from the beginning to avoid confusion, since his dad's name was James. Lots of families had tons of people with the same name, back then. In George's family, there were tons of Harold Harrisons.

And yes, I know too much about the Beatles. It's an illness.

I think it happened a lot at that time too. Both of my grandmothers went by their middle names - always - and one was from London and the other from the rural midwest.

Non-catholic / non-southerner here. One of my parents is from a catholic family--my cousins' known names are their first + middle name, for example, Alice Mary. Katherine Ann. Mary Beth. None has ever gone by 1 name...that is not their name.

These cousins grew up in the 70's. As with everything, what is old is now new again. Get used to it I guess.

I call my daughter by her first and middle name sometimes, simply because I love how it sounds.

This is the way I feel with both of my kids.
