10:34 what source are you citing for "Many kids don't have a proper chance to socialize because all their peers are having fun at school and they are stuck at home with their parents."?
That is simply not the case anymore, at least in the DC area. Do a simple internet search and you will find homeschool activities and co-ops, businesses aimed at kids with homeschool classes and homeschool sports leagues. You have likely seen groups of homeschoolers out and about and not even known it. Just because others don't choose your path doesn't mean it's "not right" |
| YES it indeed has a stigma. A religious or conservative one especially. I have no issues with homeschooling because of medical issues or being in a rural area where schools are not easy to get to, but here in DC for example, with so many outstanding public and private schools in the area, why on earth would you homeschool anyway? The few homeschooled kids I’ve met, I don’t like. They are weird. Something is off about them, and their parents as well. So I frankly stay far away from them. Another family I know didn’t do homeschooling properly and their daughter fell way behind in reading level. |
| Do you judge other entire groups of people on the actions of 2 families? Gosh I hope not. |
The public schools in DC are worthless and the private schools are outrageously expensive. Homeschooling is a viable choice, especially with co-ops. |
What a bigoted and ignorant statement. |

Every type of schooling has a stereotype and stigma associated with it: private school- rich, coddled brats; public school- uncultured bubble test fillers; boarding school- neglected druggies.
So pick you poison and go confidently forth knowing the stereotypes don't have to be true for you and usually aren't true for most. |
THANK YOU. The number of times people of have said to ME - in our search for the right school for our two kids - "oh why don't you homeschool?" is crazy. NO one has ever said this to my husband, arthough we've both played an active role in looking. I feel like calling people on it (I work full time and make slightly more $ than my husband) |
This is not about homeschooling, it's about the sexist notion that the mother is the default parent. Grow a spine and call people on it--otherwise you're just part of the problem. |
| I wonder how many of the kids get to choose being home-schooled. If a kid is weird or has a health problem, I could see that homeschooling might work. If the kid is a normal kid, they may become weirder because of home schooling. |
