Georgetown closed stores

What's in the old mall structure? I've been to H&M, DSW, and seen the DMV but there must still be a ton of unused space remaining.

I remember taking my son there when he was little (early 2000s) and I remember wondering what happened -- why it was so empty. And then of course it closed.

I have all these memories of restaurants that no longer exist but were part of my young adulthood -- Georgetown Cafe (many late nights there), Hamburger Heaven, Something that was like White Castle (can't remember its name), Au pied de cochon.

And there was a great club there Champions.

Sigh.

White Castle was probably Little Tavern; on M west of Wisconsin.

Georgetown mall is still there. I think? It’s a huge hulking brick thing on M St. I last went there for bowling around the back side. Some $$$ place. Lucky strike? I remember ogling FAO Schwartz in there as a kid. Victoria’s Secret as a teen. And then there used to be a DMV there after the mall failed FOR A WHILE.

I have been to Georgetown this year to go to the movies, Lush, Sephora, and the Apple Store.

Is the mall that everyone’s referring to the building that DSW and the DMV are located in? If so, That’s hardly a “mall”

I used to go to Georgetown specifically for those three stores. Except now the only shop exclusive to Gtown is Lush.

This was years ago, but one of those places sold the best coke at the best prices. Dunno if it's still the case.

I always thought they were fronts for the PLO or Hizbollah.

Interesting attribution. Whoever owned them, I think it's axiomatic that once you see one of those suits, you know a stash of coke can't be that far away.

I just don't understand how the Georgetown Mall has stayed empty for so many years. It was technically prime real estate back in the day. Now what are they going to do with all that empty space right in the middle of M Street?

You are dense. It used to be a real mall.

Tiffany & Co is coming to CityCenter (2-3 blocks from the new Apple Store).

When I moved here in 2010 that would have been unthinkable. Georgetown is dead. Long live the new Georgetown - Mt Vernon Square/Shaw.

Careful what you wish for! Oh, and please, be yourself! Georgetown has its charms, but there's a lot of nasty segregated DC not too far from its surface. Don't go full Georgetown, Mt. Vernon Square/Shaw!

I think it'd be impossible to. So close to Union Station that we're always getting people from flights/bus/trains coming from across the country and up-down the Eastern seaboard.

Plus you know...regular D.C. traffic. But if Georgetown was this segregated when it actually had foot traffic, well it could get worse.

I don't care about the stores in Georgetown. The tourists rarely venture off M and Wisconsin. Georgetown is still a beautiful place to live. Let the retail go away; no one who lives there cares. In fact we want it gone. Leave us Dumbarton Oaks, Stachowski's, and our gorgeous streets and homes.

Then you’re a moron. Because the loss of significant retail will absolutely affect your property value.

I don't care about that. This is a family home and I don't need the money.

Screw you Marie Antoinette. I guess you don’t care about the many people who would lose their jobs if all of the retail was gone. But who cares? Less traffic around your trust fund baby house. Let them eat cake, right?

I think they’ve expanded the parking into the bottom levels of the old mall. With the expansion of some of the stores on front and back, as well as the bowling place, I’m not sure how much vacant space is left inside.

For those of you not familiar, it was a big space that was accessed primarily from an entrance near Clyde’s. It went down 3-4 levels with a big atrium. Some stores on street level had entrances from inside and outside (like Clyde’s and JCrew). There was a food court on the bottom level. The mix of stores changed over the years but it was quite a shopping destination when it opened. Stores I loved included Britches, Liberty of London, Talbots (in its heyday), pappagallo, and so many more.

Lush, which makes stinky, migraine-inducing junk, is in every mall in the area (and freestanding stores too). It’s not exclusive to Georgetown

I wouldn't object to Lush if they would keep the doors closed so I don't have to cross the street to walk by safely.
