college - tell me about "the best kept secret" schools - anyone have one?

My thoughts would be Haverford in Mass., Lawrence in Wisconsin, Earlham in Indiana, and Hanover in Indiana. How about Goucher in Maryland, Connecticut College, Longwood College in Farmville, VA or Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, VA? It really shouldn't be too too hard to get into some of the midwestern schools from VA - you have some geographic diversity.

Linfield College in Oregon. It's a fantastic liberal arts school, in a great little town, and has a reputation for being a very friendly/easygoing/inclusive campus. A very high percentage of students who attend study abroad at some point -- either for January term or for a semester. It's one of the things the school prides itself on.

Haverford is in Pennsylvania near Philadelphia. I have heard good things about Earlham. I have heard that Longwood can be a terrible situation -- that the town is still pretty much segregated and the school is "so-so" at best.

If she liked Wooster, think about Wittenberg in Ohio as well.

oh yeah, and while we're on the Ohio theme (Wooster suggester here -- can you tell I'm a former Ohioan?), Hiram College is worth looking at, too.

OP (again ) - I am a transplanted Ohioan, too. It has made it very easy to visit the Ohio schools. Funny enough, I know very little about Hiram (other than when I was a kid the Browns used to do summer practice there. I think. ). DD is getting a lot of unsolicited mail from Hiram.

I'm a ex-Ohioan too! Maybe we all move here to DC. If you want a big school -- Ohio State U. is now highly regarded and has many great programs. Kids love it at OSU. Miami of Ohio is also popular as someone mentioned -- a lot of kids from this area are starting to go there -- Visi always has several for example -- Holton did too this past year.

I think Ohio State might be too big for DD, but a couple of years ago she had a camp counselor who RAVED about her time at Miami, she just loved it. Also, a couple of other young people we know have mentioned that Ohio University has both great Classics and Theatre departments (DD's areas of interest).

Speaking of Ohio--Case Western?

What about Pitzer? It's one of the five-college consortium in Claremont, Calif. and the "granola/crunchy" of the group. Also easier to get into than some of the others. It's akin to Hampshire in the Western Mass consortium (of Amherst, Smith, etc.), which someone else suggested.

Isn't that also where the buzzards return to roost every year?
