My guess is OP is near ATS and bused to McKinley, and is exaggerating when she says there are five elementary schools closer to her (because there's no place that fits that criteria). It's kind of a dumb complaint, though, because once ATS wasn't an option, any one of the other schools she mentioned would have also put her kids on a bus. Maybe the extra .6 of a mile was a bridge too far. Heaven forbid. |
Meant PP, not OP. |
| No PP but there are five elementary schools closer to my house than the one we attend (McK). Discovery, Nottingham, Tuckahoe, ATS and Glebe are all closer...in some cases much closer. |
That should be I'm NOT PP but... |
No- she is probably in VA Square- Wash Blvd/Lincoln st- that neighborhood. The school blocks from there is ASFS- She is zoned Ashlawn. Closer would be Key, Glebe, ATS, Barrett, and Long Branch. She goes to Ashlawn. This is the future of the NE- to an even more extreme if we keep Key as an option school. |
Could be Ashlawn.

It depends where the option schools wind up. I Nottingham or Tuckahoe become option, I think it will happen. And it will be illogical. The only way this makes sense to me is if Reed is the option school. Kids around Reed can fan out to the school closest to them because Reed is in the central part of the NW Quadrant. But once it opens as a neighborhood school everyone else will have to work around it to fill McKinley. Again, stupid. And why all schools should be on the table. |
Even if Reed were on the table, it cannot be the option school. Period. It would take away too many seats and leave the area in an unnecessary capacity crisis. Give it up. |
| Right. Reed's seats are needed. They aren't giving up the biggest one and then leaving a bazillion trailers all around it. I do think fanning out works if a school is changed, but that's Nottingham b/c it's in the middle of 4 other schools. I still think Jamestown is a better option, though, since the boundaries are so restricted. |
Oh, it’s definitely a contest. The loser’s school is going bye bye. I’m not sure I’d worked up enough to involve my congressman, but you guys always go big. Can’t take that away from you. |
DP, but do you hear yourself? |
Read these threads. Do you hear any of it? |
I am really impressed with whomever did this. Here's the list of schools, as the buses could drive that are closer to the bus stop than MCK: I was wrong... 1. ATS .4 2. Glebe .9 3. Barrett 1.2 4. Reed 1.3 miles. 5. Ashlawn 1.4 6. ASFES 1.5 miles 7. McK 1.7 |
What about Long Branch? |
The Mckinley boundaries are all out of whack because of the school of the size and the unfortunate boundary decision. Luckily, it should be resolved when Reed opens. |
