No, this is not all about illegal immigration. I grew up in an UMC family and my mother would've died of embarrassment if I'd worked in fast food, even though there were students at my HS who did work fast food, wait tables, and work retail. It was not expected that any teens in my circle (college-bound kids from families with some money) work during the school year and maybe not even in summer except as lifeguards at our private pool. My first job was after HS at an internship my parents helped me to get with a local politician. My husband grew up MC in a poor rural area and he and all his friends (the kids who expected to go to college) worked. Both in the mid nineties. Just different expectations. And I think our kids will probably get jobs, at least in the summers, but not ones where they'll be forced to wait on their peers. Our neighbors made their daughter get a job to foster a good work ethic. She took a job at a fast casual eatery but quit after two days when some kids from her HS came in to eat and laughed at her.
