Telework abuse - would you report?

Anonymous
OP, have you talked to your co-worker about this? Can you?

Snitches get stitches.

My company had an employee who claimed to be teleworking while she actually had a second job she was going to!

A friend of mine telecommuted and worked evening hours so she could finish her graduate degree classes during the day. She was a Fed. She worked it out with her supervisor.

It annoys me when people think that Monday or Friday telecommute days mean a longer weekend.

If that is what she is doing, then she would have replied to her emails?

You don't get paid to pick up your kids/do laundry/clean your house/take time off/go to the park/etc. while others are actually working during telework hours.

Seriously, there have been so many explanations offered for this person's behavior except for the fact that she is shirking work.

Seriously - do people in this thread not have any work to do? On days that I'm teleworking, only on an ad-hoc basis, I'm fielding calls, emails, sitting down and working on projects - you know, work. There is no time for the park, laundry, etc. My desk phone forwards to my cell phone. I could go on and on. This person in question is clearly just warming a chair and taking up space in a position that could probably be eliminated or reduced to part-time, if they are only working 3 days a week.

I work hard on telework days too -- but yes I throw in the laundry. And maybe take a walk at lunch time. I take a walk when I'm at the office too.

I telework full time after working in the office for years. So now instead of chatting with coworkers, doing potlucks for someone's birthday, etc. I am cleaning out the dishwasher, calling the pediatrician, feeding the cats, and yes I pick my kid up from school during what used to be my official 15 minute break.

Are all of you people who are bitching NEVER chatting with a coworker about weekend plans or making a personal call while in the office.

OP - mind your own business. Seriously.

True. Most folk do this in their downtime. They don't consolidate all this time and add it to the start and end of their work days.

OP here: thanks to those who weighed in with constructive suggestions as opposed to coming up with potential excuses.

This is a regular 9-5 (7-3) job. We are supposed to sign a document specifiying our working hours on a daily basis. No work is expected outside these hours or on weekends.

My coworkers behavior has been noticed by other coworkers also which is why we started talking and realized nobody ever hears from her. Coworker with the SAHM was surprised because he thought all of us knew. So it is a pattern observed not just by me but by others also.

And for the folk who asked, we all meet in person or email. Calling folk to follow-up on an email they are are supposed to be answering is a better weird.

And you're certain she hasn't worked out a 6-2 / 10-6 schedule on Fridays and Mondays?

You seem hell bent on reporting her. So just do it. Not sure why you even came here and asked.

Schedule a weekly conference call for 9 Monday or 3 pm Friday.

Total douchebag move. Ugh - I'm glad I don't work with any of you all.

You seem petty. Earlier you got good advice about focusing on the fact that your coworker is not doing her work.

Follow that advice.

Mind your own business. She could be doing the work really early in the morning, at night when the kids go to bed, or over the weekend.

I'm a project manager. If we have an agreement you telework, you'd better be working.

OP, do you ever surf the internet during your work hours? Post on DCUM? Chat with co-workers in the hallways or at the water coolers?
