Please quit hating on poor people. The people I know who are receiving disability are mostly people who worked for decades before applying in the mid 50s after being laid off for taking sick time.

All the wealthy families around here are pouring 2x the number of pills down their kids' throats so that they can work and not get a call from the school.

People around here are WAY worse about that kind of thing . People around here falsely pile up the govt benefits for their kid way more. Those people actually need more therapies for their kids and they probably get nothing. Move those people to Fairfax and they'll get benefits for their kids .

The disability checks are a bit much. I do wonder how the mom or grandma or whatever she is can find childcare for her adult disabled child to work? I doubt that that Down syndrome daughter can be left alone .

First, the woman with Down Syndrome started getting SSI, it appears. Probably when she got pregnant with her first child. But that first child wasn't disabled.

After that the grandma managed to get SSI as well, after she hurt her shoulder at a factory. The article said that there were several claims and denials but eventually she was approved.

Then the twins were born, low birth weight and premature which is a temporary listing condition for SSI for children. Mom of course was destitute, so they qualified financial for the program (it is income based).

Then mom had a fourth child, the little 4 year old. Not disabled.

Disability gets reviewed every few years to see if the person is still disabled, and the boys no longer made that listing.

Right. And they submit, yearly, for the twins to get disability checks. Why? Why would you even allow your DS daughter to pregnant in the first place? And then allow it again? And again? Because children are a blessing? No - because they cost little and can bring you in $500/mo in disability.

It doesn't work that way, and it isn't that easy. Your child has to actually meet a listing for a disability to qualify for SSI assistance, and no, just "being a baby" doesn't qualify. They need to have a disability. Being preterm/low birthweight does qualify (for a while) but then the qualification can get lifted (as happened here). And of course preterm birth is more frequent in low income moms with poor prenatal care.

Why would you allow your adult daughter to get pregnant three times? My guess is lack of access to a permanent form of birth control. Probably no Planned Parenthood or other clinic nearby, little access to affordable family planning (or abortion services.)

More children do increase the amount of assistance you might get from WIC for food.

Are you being deliberately obtuse? I know you know how disability works. I know how disability works. They know how disability works. Why do you think they keep submitting the kids for disability? Why do you think they keep pestering the doctors about diagnoses for the kids? They can manage get to the doctor for all sorts of pills but can't get a scrip for birth control? Thanks but I have one who is severely disabled. I see people whose kids have very mild issues getting therapies and the most school programs catered to their kids, horseback riding, government money for classes outside of school - the list is endless. If you people were more honest about what your family is receiving you'd probably be less contemptuous of others.

"Disability" and Medicaid are federal programs that are funded by the states. Each state can choose to fund them as little or much as they choose. In Maryland, even severely disabled children do not get disability payments unless their parents are destitute. I can tell you (and I have a severely disabled child) that no working parents receive disability payments. If you are talking about LISS money which can be used to pay for therapies, that is $2,000 per year, and it is done by lottery. You can't possibly be serious that middle class kids will mild issues are receiving funds to pay for multiple classes, etc. That's BS.

I have seen middle class families whose kids have no detectable issue get LISS money, yes. Two had parents who were public school teachers . I had never even heard is LISS money and I have a seriously disabled kid, but these moms were familar with the whole system, they applied for their kids and got it. They used it to pay for after school classes for the kids. I don't think that kids who might have ADHD (emphasis on might) are the ones who are supposed to be getting LISS money.

What turnip truck did you fall off of? Yes nowadays everyone is diagnosed as autistic my medical professionals - the idea is that is how the kid is then entitled to therapies that he or she needs. If the kid doesn't have that diagnosis he's not getting the therapies - it's a very common occurrence these days. The kids that grow up without issues just drop the label .
