Scary to think of this type of dog running around off leash in a park.

Guns = 33,000 deaths per year in the US
Dogs = 40 deaths per year in US

Guns scare me way more than any dog.

This is a sad story about the sad consequences of carelessness combined with stupidity. I hope the dog owner gets a big fine.

Death is one thing; mauling is another. Can be horribly disfiguring and life-changing.

Yeah, but it all depends on who has the gun. Most of us have walked on the mall many times with heavy police presence and tons of guns everywhere. I felt very safe.

I would be terrified if I was alone in the woods and a huge dog started running at me and acting out with aggression.
The dog owner is 100% at fault for this.

We can also include accidental shootings that aren't fatal.

Actually, I'd rather have a non-fatal gunshot wound than a mauling by a dog.

This dog bite study by pediatricians was just published. Bites are from a single institution:
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/305270428_Characteristics_of_1616_Consecutive_Dog_Bite_Injuries_at_a_Single_Institution

It 's abstract states " 1616 consecutive dog bite injuries over 4 years revealed a much higher prevalence of dog bites as compared with other similar centers. Though inpatient admission was rare (9.8%), 58% of all patients required laceration repair, primarily in the emergency department. Infants were more than 4 times as likely to be bitten by the family dog and more than 6 times as likely to be bitten in the head/neck region. Children ?5 years old were 62% more likely to require repair; and 5.5% of all patients required an operation. Pit bull bites were implicated in half of all surgeries performed and over 2.5 times as likely to bite in multiple anatomic locations as compared to other breeds. "

Rare inpatient admission is at 9.8%? That means 158 people admitted-not able to be treated in ER only. Rare to me would be .005%. Given the labrador numbers I am baffled since far too many dogs get the label LAB when they are clearly mixes.

That pit sweater attack was by a dog they had for 1 month. Ample time to hazard dogs/people at a dog park, getting loose, on a walk, etc.

She died because someone shot her. The end.

The dogs should not have been off leash regardless but it is extra egregious that the women clearly didn't have their dogs under voice control since they couldn't call them off. A 10 month old dog is almost full size at that point so the owner sees "puppy" and others see "adult dog". I feel awful for the dog but not the woman.

People in this area have an irrational fear of black labs. I don't understand it, but since adopting a rescue black lab, we have discovered it.

Anyone with any knowledge at all of labs, or most large breed dogs, could look at a 10-month old almost-full-size puppy and see "puppy". This man was crazy. It's a bizarre cold thing to do, shoot a dog in front of the owner. I wonder how long his SO will stay with him after this.

Again, the dogs were at least 20 yards away from the owners, off leash, and not under voice command. The woman herself acknowledges the man asked "once, maybe twice" to call off the dogs (so I'm gonna go ahead and say he was asking her multiple times since she's trying to make herself look good and is going to underestimate) and she failed to do so or was unable to do so. The police agree that the dogs were behaving aggressively and the man was justified. I really don't believe this woman's account that her dog was a perfect angel, innocent of all wrong doing. So again, I feel bad for the dog but not the owner. Her behavior was atrocious and endangered her dog to the point that the dog is now dead.

I have two dogs of my own and live in a community where plenty of the people are afraid of dogs (it's a large immigrant population and many of them aren't coming from cultures where dogs are common pets). I can either a) acknowledge that plenty of people in my community are afraid of my dogs regardless of my dogs' behavior and make sure to give people a wide berth when walking my dogs or b) declare that their fear of my dogs is irrational, not give them space or a wide berth and endanger everybody by giving people a reason to react out of fear by forcing them to interact with my dogs when they don't want to. I choose A and I gotta say, it's working out pretty freakin well for everyone so far.

In third world countries there are packs of wild/stray dogs that are very aggressive. The "domestic" dogs are not house pets but used to guard the house and are aggressive. I can see why they are scared of dogs.

It hurst me to read this story. As an animal lover, I feel so sorry for the poor dog and its owner. That being said, the owner acted irresponsibly. The laws exist for a reason. DO NOT let your dog off leash, why?!?!?!? is it really worth it? go to a dog park!!!! Please, people, do not leave your dog off leash. So heartbreaking, I hope the owner for the pup can forgive herself and move on and make smart decisions.
