If you were to start college tomorrow, what would you major in?

Same as what I majored in--accounting. Get a CPA and it's like professional trade school. Boring but always in demand.

You are me. Later got an MBA in finance.

or Accounting or Finance (my majors)
anything related to Cybersecurity, data-mining/analysis

gotta pay the bills.
not letting my kids major in any humanities- that is a hobby ( or a foregone conclusion that you know how to write), not a career. they can minor in it

I majored in humanities however, I wouldn't want my children. As long as I'm helping them pay for school, they will major in something that will set them on the path to a high earning career.

+100; You can always read history books in your free time - you don't need a history major to learn how

Ha ha! PP here. Yep, I got my finance MBA a few years later

I really enjoy school for the sake of learning so I went on for a Phd in finance. Now I'm bored and looking to go back to school. Engineering has always fascinated me so I'm going to start a civil engineer course path. It's just for me but I suppose if I see it through it could become a second career. But acct/finance had been good to me.

Why? Just asking as my mother was a speech pathology major (back when a sheepskin distressed a sheep). She was a SAHM and only briefly worked as a volunteer, but where's the market? Of course, teaching the hearing impaired is part, but where else?

Just curious.

Hospitals - helping stroke victims relearn how to swallow, talk etc.

Lots of children these days have speech delays and articulation issues, plus SLP also work with kids with executive function challenges.

Yeah, nobody likes lawyers until they need one.

First of all, law isn't a college major. Second, despite that, someone did in fact mention they would have gone to law school.

Except that history programs don't teach students how to read history books.

Common wisdom is "STEM" but what specifically? I also wonder whether the jobs that are cash cows for recent graduates today will still be cash cows for recent graduates in 4 years.

Something related to the medical field - nurse, PA etc.

Finance. A friend was finance, not even an MBA, and ended up with a large bank in NYC. Her bonuses, and she was under 30, were half a million dollars. I went to med and I owe hundreds of thousands of dollars.

2nd major in Business instead of Film (useless) just to be taken more seriously.

I'm still happy I was an English major. I work in tech and use my skills to "translate" for all the software engineers who can't communicate outside of code (aka marketing).

Meh, STEM...overrated

Actually, a tenured prof in the humanities has the very best job in the world...
