Do you have to sit next to your spouse on an airplane?

I wondered about it this morning because we were upgraded at the gate and there weren't two seats in first class together. The gate agent kept apologizing and asked if we'd like our original coach seats back, and we were just like, "No, it's ok, we totally don't need to sit together."

First class without my spouse beats coach class with him, hands down every time.

Agree. DW here and I don't get upgrades too often anymore but when I do I'll leave anyone behind in coach. I prefer to sit next to DH on flights, but would never ask anyone to switch. I fly all the time for work so am used to sitting alone. Plus DH usually has the noise cancelling headphones on for most of the flight so it's not like we are chatting the whole time (I assume the headphones aren't on my account!).

And this is where the love ends . In general we like to sit together or across from each other in the aisle seat. I just enjoy being with spouse and as someone mentioned we may have things for both of us in one bag, we can negotiate the armrest, no seat spillover, and we know the bathroom situation (I sit closet to the aisle). Pre-kids there was a time or two when only one of us could get the upgrade. I think we only did the split thing when I was pregnant and flying to CA. DH isn't a drinker so the free booze wasnt in the equation and he let me take the upgrade even though he traveled more for work. Usually we rather not upgrade one person and instead save those miles towards another trip for the two of us. We won't ask someone to change, we will just book seats way in the back if that is where two seats are together. With kids, we each take a kid or have one parent across the aisle that switches on the return flight and gets both kids

You don't see how this is more equitable than one spouse upgrading only themselves and leaving the other spouse in coach with the kids? Here's it's a trade-off. One gets the better accommodations in business/first but has to take care of the kid, the other is stuck back in coach but has a peaceful, kid-free flight. If offered the choice, there's a good chance I'd pick the coach seat myself.

Exactly. My DH would much rather be left in coach without a kid.

When I was a kid, my dad used to travel a ton for work internationally, and so when we took our annual (international) family vacation, he bought us all coach seats and all four of us pretty much always got upgraded (this was way back when airlines still did nice things like that for free). I still clearly remember once when my sibling and I were 7 and 9 and the airline only had three seats left in business (for a VERY LONG international flight), without a moment's hesitation my father looked at my mother and said, the three of you should go. He travels/traveled in coach pretty much never (and always complained about it) so that moment has always left an impression on me as a sweet expression of love by my dad. Realizing now maybe it was a sweet expression of love by my mom instead.

I prefer to OP. Now that airlines don't serve food, my DH and I often get treats to share while on the plane. We also enjoy sharing the time talking.

I'm only talking free upgrades (which is why they hardly every happen anymore). I would never use miles for an upgrade, we use all the miles for expensive flights.
