| 5th graders - I've got one in 6th now in Algebra II and compared to the year when my older child started (when there were 5 kids in his class) the fact that last year's 5th grade had half a section of kids doing Algebra I made I think a big difference to her overall experience. But the school is getting better in all sorts of ways. Just wondering whether we had managed to continue the trend of kids who are willing to do advanced maths......... |
|
Maybe silly question but,..shall we take the kids to Back to School Night?
And are any parents of 5th graders here which kids are in Algebra I? My DS is in Maths 8/7 but I heard nothing about Algebra.,. |
Kids cannot come to back to school night usually there is a group of kids above maths 8/7 who start in algebra I the way my son did last year in 5th - just wondering about the count............. i |
| I just called to ask and they said kids can come... |
There were some kids there last year. I think they stayed in the cafeteria while the parents went up to the classrooms and listened to the teachers' presentations. No one will turn them away but not the most exciting of evenings for kids. |
| Good advice, thanks!! |
| Going to Back to School Night is one of the most important things you can do as a parent at BASIS. Try to read all the syllabi beforehand to see if you have any questions.......... |
|
Unfortunately I'm sick...And I'm a single parent...So I will not be able to attend ...
Any ideas on how to contact them, ask questions later?? |
Each syllabus should have the teacher's name and email on it (usually firstname.lastname@basisdc.org). Each teacher has time set aside for parent meetings each week - contact the front office and make an appointment to see or speak with the teacher for any class you are concerned about. Overall questions about the curriculum or academic policies and procedures can be directed to kathleen.reynolds@basisdc.org |
Seems nice, smart and honest ... hope he can survive until the end of the year. |
| My kid has nearly 3 hours of homework a night.. there is literally no time to relax for him. This is our first year and its its honestly very frustrating. Do any other parents feel this way?? |
|
Talk to his teachers ASAP and/or Kathleen Reynolds. Call the office and make an appointment. That sounds like a lot - and more time than they expect a 5th or 6th grader to be spending. My 6th grader (new this year) has spent about an hour a night on his, but he gets a lot of math done during his AE period.
At back to school night many teachers said they expected kids to spend maybe 10-15 minutes a night on each subject (math being the exception) and not all classes are held each day. Good luck. |

What if it's not taking other kids this long to do work? He's smart, advanced on all his SOL tests, but jeez o pete! They all give him work to do and there is no time to do anything here at home. We really have no choice but to stick it out since there really are no other good options for him to go where we live. He gets home around 5 and we eat dinner and we start work at 6. We don't get finished up till 8:30 or 9. I sit with him so he doesn't get overwhelmed and I keep him focused. I asked him about his AE hour and I don't think he's using his time wisely in that class. He said he will do his math in AE from now on, so that was a good suggestion, I appreciate it.
I just really don't know what the school can do about us complaining that it's too much. Haven't kids had this load at this school before for a few years now? They won't change the amount of homework because "HE" is taking so long to do it, I am sure,
He missed a couple days his first week because he was sick and he was so far behind. It was so stressful to catch up and get all the notes he needed so he wouldn't do poorly on the tests so he had to stay in student hours after school plus do is pile of homework. I just hope this lets up a bit. |
The only reason to talk to the teachers is sometimes - if they are new - they don't realize how long the assignments are taking the kids. The assume something is a 10 minute assignment but it takes most kids 40-45. While the core curriculum is the same each teacher puts his or her own spin on it so it isn't the same. Getting behind is tough - as you have discovered. But in general the workload is heavy. Most kids get better at juggling it after the first couple months. But it is absolutely a lot. Of course if your child has any sort of learning disability or ADHD (no clue if that is at plan in your case) the time estimates you hear probably don't apply |
You can not be sick at Basis for more than a day or two. Whenever my DC has been really sick, his grades suffer for that grading period. |
