As part of the feeder pattern/boundary recommendations put forward by Deputy Mayor for Education Smith, which were adopted by Mayor Gray last August, DCPS is required to conduct an attendance zone boundary survey when the IB population of a school exceeds 75 percent for three consecutive years, provided that the utilization of the school is more than 90 percent (Recommendation 35). Brent should surpass the 75 percent threshold in the next two to three years based on an influx of in-bound Kindergartners shut out of the lottery. As the parent of a toddler, I would like to see the Principal and LSAT/PTA start engaging Councilmember Allen and DCPS on capacity and modernization issues as soon as possible based on recemt enrollment trends. My understanding is that Brent had been slated for Phase II in 2016 or 2017, but I don't see any likelihood of it happening before 2020 without stepped up community advocacy. While the movement to build grassroots support for Jefferson is admirable, presefving the trajectory of Brent should remain a top priority. |

| I have not read through all the posts but I am a mother of a young child at Brent. We love it and have been very pleased with the teachers, curriculum and the sense of community. The school is warm and welcoming and it is great to have a neighborhood school. Of course, there are a few things I wish were a little different- for example the language issue and also the space itself could use a bit of remodeling. But overall very happy with Brent. |
