Mercedes is Spanish for mercy. It's actually very common for Spaniards (or other Spanish speakers) to name children "words" that mean something religious.
I have a friend from Spain named Imnaculada (Immaculate--like immaculate conception).
Also I have a friend named Ascension, and I've known people named Concepcion, etc.
