Southwest to Eastern HS

Incidentally...

there were 227 from Fairfax Co. public schools (with nearly four times as many students as DC public)
there were 142 from MoCo Public public schools (with more than three times as many students as DC public)
there were 22 from Arlington Co. public schools (with around half as many students as DC public)

But what percent of parents in Fairfax/MoCo/Arlington send their kids to private schools? Probably a lot fewer than in DC. If many of the most academically capable kids are skimmed off the top and enrolled in private schools, of course there will be fewer merit scholars attending public schools.

Of course, it's a chicken-and-egg situation: If fewer strong performers went private, the schools would look a lot better -- but if the schools looked better, fewer strong performers would opt for private.

With the boundary chances your DC won't be the only non-AA advanced student at Eastern -- there could be many, especially since Eastern population is small compared to Wilson. Wilson is only 20% White, remember.

This is a very real issue. Until there is a critical mass of white kids, the IB white parents are NOT sending their kids there. It just wont happen. How many white kids have attened Eastern in the last 20 years? none? maybe 5? It doesn't matter if they have the top scores in the City. it won't happen. Same reason white parents don't choose banneker even though its probably more rigorous than Wilson. Less than 5 white kids. This is what parents mean when they talk to each other about "we all just need to stick together through each grade"- they mean a cohort of high SES white kids.

I think the real reason that white parents don't send their children to Banneker is because they fear their child's self esteem will be crushed when their white child is outperformed by Black students from a lower SES.

Nope, we're worried about their spirit being crushed by a bunch of AA kids who have been brought up to hate and vilify white people. BTDT.

Exactly, how many of these Banneker children have you met? How do you know how they were raised? You don't. You just don't want your child attending a school with Black children who don't see themselves as inferior. As long as you can place Blacks in the Ballou, Anacostia, or Woodson category, you feel good about yourself. Many of the students at Banneker will be attending universities that are majority white. Truthfully, there is a lot of documented world history that might warrant such vilification from various global socially-constructed racialized groups.

Vilification of other students is warranted based on world history? That's the kind of attitude I'm looking for in a school!

It appears that what people like you are looking for is a DCPS school that has enough high-performing white students to make you feel comfortable.

Please enlighten the reading public, how do you that a bunch of AA kids have been brought up to hate and vilify white people?

Why bother making a racist comment like this?

DCPS and DC Public Charter create their own chicken and egg situation as a matter of policy. Where are the elementary GT programs? Language immersion lotteries for native speakers (other than Oyster) and middle school immersion programs? Test-in middle schools period? Charter schools with great facilities, including playing grounds/courts? High wattage test in high school programs, including for STEM and International Baccalaureate? The burbs provide the programs to generate the Merit Scholars. DC's fine with 7 Scholars when it should have them in the double digits by now.

Well we are talking about a white child who's avoiding predominantly AA populated application only schools e.g. Banneker, SWW and McKinley to attend a diverse comprehensive school. If I was the parent I would cut my losses too and attend Wilson with the false sense of security. You do know the racial tension/hatred at Wilson is at its all time high.

Didn't know it and didn't notice it at the gay pride event at Wilson. Are you a race baiter?

If so, cut it out.

They are wondering if the honors/IB Diploma program at Eastern would be doable if a whole group of them went at once. It is all questions at this point but the idea passing through their minds is a hopeful thing.

I see Eastern's prospects as a desirable neighborhood high school being poor for 5-15 years, and good after that, for the next generation of Capitol Hill denizens. That is to say the future parents currently living in group houses on the Hill . I'v been hearing talk from Maury parents that Eliot-Hine would be doable if a whole group of them went at once for several years now. Until that happens, the Basis MS parents aren't going.

I agree. BASIS families didn't choose BASIS over SH, E-H or Jefferson only to go back to Eastern. No way we'd do that. We are sticking with BASIS.

+100 With the boundary change proposal, we are likewise not even considering Eastern for our Basis student at this point.

Basis parent here and my DD will attend Eastern.

I have yet to encounter racism from DCPS students I've encountered lots of racism from DC parents particularly the ones on DCUM. You've got to be carefully taught, I suppose.

I'm sure YOU haven't experienced this from DCPS students, but both my DCs and I have. It's hard to be white EOTP sometimes.

Racial tension is up everywhere. But how is that manifesting at Wilson?
Anonymous
The tension is evident it is the cost of being diverse. No big deal there's black and white students that just don't get along. There's nothing to be alarmed about..I wouldn't use the word hate, it is what it is. Just like there's certain areas of the city that blacks and whites avoid that is what is done at Wilson.
Anonymous
There are also blacks who don't get along with blacks and whites who don't get along with whites-- this is high school after all.
