Because they are family. Because the MIL misses having her child wake up in her house and have breakfast, go to bed at night in her house etc. Family time.

Then she should have bought a two bedroom condo if having her son, his wife, and their child stay with her. Because there's no room at her place!!

This is why I have a 2 bedroom, even though it's just me and the dog most of the year. I moved 600 miles away from my friends and family and love them staying when they're in town. If I didn't have the extra room and the living room was the only option, I wouldn't take offense to then staying at a hotel if they so choose.
