It's not boring if you fish! My kids and I read that short story together when they were something like 10 and 12 - and they really got into it. They are fairly avid fisherman .

Me too. It is such a pointless genre. Bores me to tears.

You've really been reading the wrong poems:

E. E. Cummings - My Love

my love
thy hair is one kingdom
the king whereof is darkness
thy forehead is a flight of flowers
thy head is a quick forest
filled with sleeping birds
thy breasts are swarms of white bees
upon the bough of thy body
thy body to me is April
in those armpits is the approach of spring
thy thighs are white horses yoked to a chariot
of kings
they are the striking of a good minstrel
between them is always a pleasant song
my love
thy head is a casket
of the cool jewel of thy mind
the hair of thy head is one warrior
innocent of defeat
thy hair upon thy shoulders is an army
with victory and with trumpets
thy legs are the trees of dreaming
whose fruit is the very eatage of forgetfulness
thy lips are satraps in scarlet
in whose kiss is the combinings of kings
thy wrists
are holy
which are the keepers of the keys of thy blood
thy feet upon thy ankles are flowers in vases
of silver
in thy beauty is the dilemma of flutes
thy eyes are the betrayal
of bells comprehended through incense

This. Also The Hobbit. I couldn't even get through the first chapter.

There can be many sensations for your hatred. You want to feel the lines in good writing. You want it to arch and curve like the back of a lover. Perhaps you should leave Paris. Under the stone arch, there are the things that will haunt you. The memories will burn the back of your mouth like single malt. It will taste like war…Idle people on the internet will groan with you in unison.

Old Man and the Sea is only about fishing in the way that Leaves of Grass is only about grass.

yes, there is a deeper meaning. Being a fisherman helps you to get into the story..

Anna Karenina. So many pages about farming. I forced myself to read the entire thing, and am still annoyed my close friend recommended it. I also agree about poetry. Don't enjoy it.

Sometimes I feel like scholars look for deeper meaning in stuff when there isn't any. Maybe it really was just a book about fishing and crappy luck.

You're expecting a 15-year old to be discriminating?

I don't like fiction. There are only a few exceptions.

I read nonfiction, mostly stuff others would find boring.
