Let's just admit it; the Beatles are overrated

OP Are you linking The Beatles' with MPT's recent fund drive during which they showed The Beatles' first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show? If so, it might be more about annoying public television than your belief that The Beatles are over-rated.

lessons in this thread: people get really mad when others don't like what they like.

I think you're missing the point. It's not about "liking what I like." Everyone has different tastes. But when you are saying something is "overrated", then that's a different thing altogether.

Nope. This isn't a mommy war. It's a historical argument, not about taste. Ops sentiment is more like "Stalin wasn't that influential" than it is like "breastfeeding is overrated."

there are several posts in this thread that say "if you don't like the beatles there's something wrong with you" or "enjoy your derivative crap." i don't see anyone telling those posters "it's not about taste."

there are 20 bands i would listen to before putting on a beatles record.

I'm the poster who said there is something wrong with you if you hate The Beatles. I stand by that.

Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, and Ned Rorem all admired the Beatles as songwriters and composers. I'll respect their opinions on music any day over yours, OP.

Sgt. Pepper's is a genius of an album, absolutely brilliant. The best of the Beatles' songs will still be sung in 100 years.

I say that as someone whose favorite band is the Rolling Stones.

It definitely doesn't hold up today their number of acts from that then who have enduring sound the Beatles are one of them. I think the Rolling Stones are actually better.

But they could certainly write better than you can.

Pls. Lest I be accused of playing favorites, I love The Beatles, the Stones, the Kinks, The Who, the Dave Clark Five. Etc. it's not a binary /exclusionary thing.

As Duke Ellington said, there are two kinds of music - good and bad.

Completely overrated. Now, Nilsson, he was the real deal. Shame that he had such a corrupt manager.

I'm in my young 30's now, and the Beatles songs have stayed with me since middle school. At any age and any mood, I could find a Beatles song that fit. I can't say that about any other band or musician. I love music from classical to Jay Z, but I can live without it all, except the Beatles.
