Little question that MCPS and others that opened on time got it right as the weather was better than predicted. But kudos to all of the school districts for making decisions last night rather than at 4:30 in the morning, it makes a huge difference in allowing parents to plan for the day.

The weather was not "better as predicted". The forecast was for bitter cold, lows in single digits with wind chill added in. Exact;y what happened.

What really did happen is that everyone bought the media hype and expected that an iceberg would appear on the horizon and sweep their kids away.

I agree with the earlier PP who noted that in places like MN and Chicago (places where very cold temps are the norm in winter and where people have the clothing, etc. to be ready for such temps), the schools CLOSED. They did the right thing and so should we.

At 9AM it will be 27* in Arlington.

At 10AM it will be 31*.

That four-degree difference matters because ... why?

The 2 hour delay is not about getting to 2 or 3 degrees warmer. It is about giving school system mechanics/engineers extra time to fix any problems that might arise due to the cold.

I read somewhere that a bunch of MCPS schools had to close early because of weather-related issues. And at least one false alarm triggered by the cold. Did that not happen?

Four schools in Montgomery closed early because of problems with power, heat or water. Jackson Road Elementary in Silver Spring and Capt. James Daly Elementary School in Germantown lost power; pipes burst at White Oak Middle School in Silver Spring; and the heat malfunctioned at Magruder High School in Rockville.

Earlier in the day, a fire alarm went off at Winston Churchill High School in Potomac, apparently because of a malfunctioning water pipe. Students were evacuated to the outdoors for 10 minutes, schools officials said. Some were without coats while they waited for the building to be deemed safe.

Overall, the problems in Montgomery were more than a typical day but were relatively few in a system of 202 schools, said schools spokesman Dana Tofig.

Churchill is the WRONG place for a fire alarm to malfunction on a -10 degree day. I can already see the uproar and threat of lawsuits from those jackass parents.

Montgomery County Public Schools will open two hours late today due to emergency weather conditions. Bus service will be provided on a two-hour-delayed schedule. Morning prekindergarten, morning half-day Head Start, other morning half-day programs and field trips are canceled. Other activities and programs that begin at 10:30 a.m. or earlier are canceled. Administrative offices are open on time. Day care programs in school buildings will remain open as scheduled.
