I am old enough to remember when that Marky Mark billboard went up in Manhattan. I almost drove into a building I was drooling so hard. I was 21, in the Big Apple and away from the tiny Midwestern town I grew up in. All hopes and no sense, but man my life was amazing.

I lived in NYC then too and remember the Marky Mark poster too. I would never give the 90s back I was living a sex-in-the-city life. Fun times. I just hope my kids get to experience a hopeful and optimistic era like it.

The biggest thing about the 90s was OPTIMISM. There was soo much hope for the future. The world was going to be amazing, The Soviets were gone, the Internet was here, economic empowerment for all. Alas...too good to be true.

Great thread. Thank you, OP.

Sigh.

Speaking of Ann Taylor, their clothes were actually well made in the 90s

That's another thing missing. Quality has gone to hell in most things.

Oh, come on people, quality had already gone to hell by the 90s!

Maybe compared to some earlier time period, bit relative to now it was the golden ages. My college towels from Kmart were made in the USA - and they're still in great shape 14 years later. Knit shirts weren't all "tissue tees," which meant that they'd last a lot longer than what I can find now. I still have the rare Banana Republic shirts that fit and wear amazingly from 1993. Something has changed with regards to quality and it is not to the consumer's benefit.

Agree with PP. I have things I bought in the mid-late 90s that are still almost like new. My Airwalks for one, I still wear them frequently.

And I preferred Nirvana and the rest of the grunge phase to any of the music in that long playlist. Not sure how this thread got so long without mentioning those. I still have a CD player in my car and spent a 12 hour round trip drive a few weeks ago listening to all my CDs from the 90s....since I stopped buying them in 1999, my car music is stuck on Tori Amos, 10,000 Maniacs, Counting Crows, Green Day, Nirvana, etc. Fabulous car ride.

I think it's Mel Gibson below? No idea who is above him.

It's not Mel Gibson. Don't think it's anyone famous. Just an example of the clothing
