Thanks...a lot written here....but honestly....what exactly is the point? |
Nowhere in his remarks as reported there does he say anything like that. ![]() |
Here are the overall admission rates for the Ivy League's Class of 2016: Harvard 5.79%, Dartmouth 10.05%, Brown 9.16%, Princeton 7.29%, Yale, 6.72%, Penn 12.10% and Columbia 6.89%. |

My DC has gotten multiple emails and letters from every Ivy league school (expect Princeton so far) asking DC to apply. Based on good, but not great, PSATs. Today's letter was Harvard (and Williams too). Last week we got a bumper sticker from Cornell. My view is that all they are doing is drumming up applications so they can turn more people down and make their admissions rates even lower. No way is my DC getting in to Harvard. |
Frankly, it would be stupid for a school NOT to try to “game” the rankings by encouraging applications. The schools know that admittance rates aren’t that relevant, but if US News is going to use admittance rates, then it makes sense for schools to try to goose the # of applications. California has it figured out best of all by allowing applicants to apply to ALL schools in the state in a single application with no additional fee. UCLA had nearly 100,000 applications this year: http://newsroom.ucla.edu/portal/ucla/ucla-sets-new-undergraduate-applications-242778.aspx |
georgetown doesn't seem to play the game as much given them holding out on using common app or ED like their peer ranked institutions do. Given their name recognition and location, I think gtown could drop their selectivity to Duke levels at least if not lower if they played that game. |
Good point. They also require 3 SAT Subject tests, which I suspect weeds out even more applicants since every other school requires only 2. Whereas some of the "very selective" schools don't require a supplement to the common app, or at least not one that requires another essay. |
