Which 529 plan do you have your kids in? How much do you contribute per year?

Yes, the fees are higher than they should be but it is not a bad program once you factor in the tax break.

If you have be patience to do the paperwork, you can invest in MD to get the tax break and then move your money out to a lower fee plan (Utah, Ny).

We have both the prepaid and 529. They recently lowered the fees.

MD 529. 2 kids. $3,600/kid per year. Also added some from bonus payments here and there.

We are now a little over a year away from college for our first kid. We have just under $160k saved for her. Sadly, not enough even for OOS publics and not nearly enough for the privates.

We use the VA Invest. We started with $200/month per kid and now invest $1000/month for Kid 1 and $500/month for kid 2. They are four years apart. My parents have also invested $4000/year/kid since my first was born (two accounts and changed the beneficiary on the second account after my daughter was born).
