Bullis school

Thank you. If you would like to congratulate me in person, I am the Mom driving the Range Rover, going too fast on Pilgrim (?) Drive with the wrong private school bumper sticker.
Hope your child gets into the Ivy you want him to attend..........oh, sorry, I meant the Ivy he wants to attend........right.

I have a question. We are out of town applicants who have been accepted to both Bullis and The Severn School in Severna Park. We have heard nothing but good things atbout The Severn School but we were impressed with the Arts program at Bullis. What do you guys suggest? Please no negative comments as I am not well versed with the areas.

I would pick based on your commute. These two schools are pretty far apart--Severn School is more an Annapolis school, Bullis pulls from DC and MD suburbs.

I am looking to live in the Bowie area. Bullis provides transportation services (big plus). Severn morning transportation but really looking for the overall best school between the two.

First sentence was funny. Second sentence overkill (and lame).

Thank you ! Sorry to the recent serious (?) poster that we are unable to help. Maybe you want to stay where you are!

Dear 21:10 poster...I am not too familiar with Severn beyond that it is near Baltimore. I have a child at Bullis and we know many kids that make the trip from Prince Georges on the bus each day. Students at Bullis come from a huge geographical range, as well as diverse backgrounds--the community has been welcoming of our family and my child has friends from all over the area. Are you MS or US? US has some very dynamic teachers on the cutting edge with technology and pedagogy (see Wash Post article about Stacey Roshan this week). My child is heavily involved in the arts--band instrument plus the musical and has had great teachers and lots of fun. I don't know of a way to "rank and compare" the two schools...I would perhaps talk to current families and go with what feels like the best "fit."

Thank you so much for your response. My dtr will be entering the 9th grade this year. She has her heart set on Bullis. Bullis has a wonderful arts program and does a great job with balancing the arts, athletics and academics from what we have heard so far. Severn comes highly recommended but we have not had anyone to really sit and talk to....

I bet if you call the Severn admissions office, they could put you in touch with some parents who would be happy to share their experiences. I know at Bullis we have parents who volunteer to answer questions at open houses, etc. Not trying to turn you away from Bullis! But always good to make an informed decision.

My kids aren't near 3rd grade yet, so I've never looked at Bullis. I do know a former Bullis teacher who says nothing but great things about the school and has highly recommended as a nurturing school that provides kids with a lot of individual attention. Without even having looked at it, I think I can say that I would definitely choose Bullis for my kids over public school. The average class size is 15 at Bullis. I seriously doubt you find that at any public school. I also think that smaller schools offer kids many more opportunities than public to participate in sports, arts, public speaking, and writing. I believe that the MoCo public schools offer a great academic education, but I think for those looking for a more well-rounded experience, Bullis would be a better choice than public.

I totally agree. My kids have been at both MoCo schools k-11 and private 4 - 9. While the MoCo schools are "rigorous" the privates educate the whole child. Moco is factory education. Get em in get out. A ton of material is thrown at the students but there is really not enough time for real teaching. The kids are expected to learn it on their own time. I hate that. I have one DC that loves his public school and one that loves his private. It really depends on the kid.

Unless there is something specific at Bullis that you are really enamored with, go to Severn. That commute from Bowie to Potomac is way too long. Bullis is a good school on a beautiful campus, but it's not like it's anywhere near the best school in this area.

Really agree with the PP. Bullis is a long commute. Nightmare traffic.

Also, honestly, Bullis priced as a tier 1 school, but it is not thought of that way around DC. I say this even though my son would love to go there (We live near the school).

Bullis is not viewed as a tier 1 school only by the DC snobs who think the world resolves around DC and the inner burbs (ie, mostly lawyers, lobbyists, journalists, etc). There is a big world out there that these types completely miss.
