| What are the rules on pupil placement? Is it like DCPS' out-of-boundary lottery? |
exactly!!!!! |
For about the last 14-15 yrs Lemon Road has had a relaxed pupil-placed option. If you live in fairfax county, you can apply to send your child to Lemon Road provided there is space in the grade level. The other stipulation is that your school principal has to sign off on releasing you to LRES. LRES has had full day K for at least 14-15 yrs and this was an attraction to some families. They would need to commit to stay and not only do it for the full day K. Families from Timber Lane, Kent Gardens, Chesterbrook, Shrevewood, Westgate, Haycock, etc have chosen to send their kids to LRES. |

The scope of the study has already been determined and that won't change. Which area gets assigned to Lemon Road first hasn't been determined and is up for grabs so, yes, parents can still influence that decision. Keep in mind that there were some adjustments made at the margins to the staff's recommendations in the recent Annandale study.
This is part of the area that helped Janie Strauss eke out a victory over Louise Epstein last year. She'll hear what the parents have to say even if she won't tip her hand as openly as some School Board members might. Best to weigh in early and often, and accept the possibility you may not get what you want. |
|
I would absolutely call and write Janie Strauss. During her re-election campaign, she made a big point of telling Great Falls parents that she'd protected Langley's boundaries for 18 years and kept their kids from getting redistricted to other schools, some of which were presumably closer to their homes. She sure as hell ought to make sure that Lemon Road parents in Falls Church who live in her district get as much of a hearing as the wealthy parents in Great Falls.

By "those people" do you mean people for whom education is not valued? Or, are you referring to something else? |
| uhhh... rhetorical construct using irony aimed at original poster... |
| ...or maybe cynicism... still aimed at original poster |
Yes Lemon Road was renovated 10 yrs ago and is only meant to house 347 students. |
We love our school (Churchill Rd) but 350 sounds wonderful. I hope they can manage to keep it at or under that mark. Good luck Lemon Road parents and teachers! |
| I assume after the change the word lemon road will be synonymous with lemon like car defect. |

To address 16:25's bloviating.
Jefferson Houston ES, "1", 72% FARMS, 74% Black, 14% Hispanic, 10% White, <1% Asian Freedom Hill ES, "6", 19% FARMS, 40% White, 31% Asian, 24% Hispanic, 5% Black (is it skewed by a Level IV program though?) Lemon Hill ES, "8", 20% FARMS, 53% White, 26% Hispanic, 16% Asian, 5% Black FH/LH are simply not comparable to the disaster that is Jefferson-Houston in ACPS. 13:48, I'm going to guess sending Town of Vienna kids from FH to Vienna ES is going to make FH even *more* FARMS/ESOL. 14:03, yeah, checking immigration status will do wonders. Maybe children of illegals should just sit at home, watch TV. Maybe they can go out with their dad to loiter in front of the 7-Eleven? |

So...
Did anyone actually go to the public meetings held the past two nights? |
| The Lemon Road elementary data is skewed because it accepts student transfers. The actual percentage of minorities would be much higher if transfers were not allowed and it was a closed school which is what FCPS is currently proposing. |
