You guys fucking suck. Now I have to go out of my way to buy and pack the strawberry milk that my two elementary aged DCs love. |
Yeah! Bravo! Kudos! |
When will the stupid anti dye hysteria die out? when everything is a depressing grey or water color? |
Yes...adults are addicted to sugar drinks. Because...they start expecting their drinks to be full of sugar when they are young kids. It's weird to me that you use this as evidence that there should be sugared drinks readily available to kids in school. |
Wow!! That is awesome. My kid just started K this year and I found the strawberry milk a bit strange. Actually, DD mentioned that it tastes weird anyway. Why would they need to serve that anyway?? 25 grams of sugar. 25!! Good job RFKM! |
Although I understand OP's objection to strawberry milk, I think this is a great teaching point for our children. Either (1) you pack your child's lunch and explain to him/her that you are doing so, b/c you do not think that the school lunches are healthful; or (2) you tell your child that s/he is not permitted to purchase strawberry milk. Children need to learn about nutrition and how to make good choices, why not start early.
As long as there are good choices in schools, I feel that there are bigger issues to worry about than their drinks (but, then again, I have two underweight children, and we still serve them whole milk). |
Exactly, PP, why not start early and serve healthy food in school? Why give kids this mixed message by serving sugary crap? Why does this even need to be an option? |
When your kid comes play date at my house guess what ?
Strawberry AND Chocolate milk !!! |
Well, obviously, PP, parents aren't making it a "teachable moment." That's why we have an epidemic of childhood obesity: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fet-5oYwus0 Also, you understand "underweight" is not being in a low percentile, right? So many people don't understand this on DCUM, so I worry about our educational system as a whole, not just what they're serving for lunch. |
That's fine with me - it's a treat at a playdate. But I'd rather not have it available to my kid every single day via the school. And I bet the teachers appreciate kids not having 25g of sugar in a beverage, to say nothing of the sugar in the actual food. Love, Someone who actually doesn't stress that much about what her kids eat, but still thinks that a school doesn't need to offer strawberry milk |
If that is what it takes to get your child to consume milk and get adequate dairy, then I wouldn't worry too much.
I grew up drinking chocolate milk throughout my school yrs. and never had a cavity until I was twenty five and was always very thin until my thirties. Am 45 now and still have a clean bill of health Thank God!!! |
Thanks for caring about this OP! I'm in MCPS district, but our kids are under 5. I'd also be concerned about strawberry "milk". I think it's ridiculous that there is so much junk available at schools. They should be setting the example! |
I'm in FCPS and I just realized that we don't serve whole milk as an option anymore. Skim milk is SO much worse for kids!!!
Does anyone know what became of that FDA proposed regulation regarding allowing aspartame-laden milk to be labeled milk rather than diet milk? I will flip out if kids are getting fed aspartame rather than real milk! |
