How similar or different is Duke compared to Rice?

For better or worse, there are lots of Asian kids who go to top schools and don't hang out with anyone else. A lot of them look down on the "mediocre" white kids and think that it is not possible that they kids can both be partying and working hard academically (yes, it is possible).

The assimilated Asian kids I referred to were those who went to parties and were not really different non-Asian kids. I'm not saying that they threw away their heritage. They were and should be proud of where they came from. But they could interact seamlessly with anyone.

This is a huge compliment in my book. If you are going to school in America, you should be able to function well in the mainstream culture. You take it as you wish. FFS.

I’m not PP, but I’ve always understood “assimilate” to refer to joining the culture of the majority. No reference to whether it is superior, inferior, or neutral.

I say this as a Jew whose family assimilated over generations into the majority culture of this country without regard to whether it was “superior”, whatever that means. 🙄

Thank you. Well put. Others are just looking for something to be angry about. Lots of Asians still self-segregate at top colleges. Don't think this is the goal. They are doing no one a favor. Not themselves. Not the rest of the student body.

Not sure what you mean by “best majors” since it’s not a R1. Sophisticated STEM research won’t be available.

?? Students are getting national undergraduate awards in these subjects. It is where many of the resources go. Being ignorant about lacs is fine, but I also think to say Pomona is bad at STEM is just flat out wrong. Check out any grad school feeder rankings!
