I will never understand the deep insecurity of SLAC parents. How many of these threads do we need?

At this point, they almost serve as athletic training camps rather than educational institutions. ~40% of LACs are varsity athletes compared to ~15% of research universities. And all of this just to mostly recruit the middle-of-the-pack athletes when they could have more space for world-class, talented, and intellectual students.

I think that you are talking about the Ivies. Athletes at a NESCAC or a school like Swat have an academic bar that is much higher with the majority athletes being above the mean for the school itself.

Yes, but my point is that LACs do not benefit from having so many athletes. It just hurts their academic reputation.[/

That is silly. Williams’ reputation is at or near the top despite its emphasis on athletics. DIII athletics is nothing like DI. Athletics can demonstrate leadership and other skills necessary for a successful post-graduate career. As Chief of Staff George C. Marshall said during World War II “I want an officer for a secret and dangerous and mission. I want a West Point football player.” FWIW, both my kid’s went to LACs and neither was an athlete. In fact, no one in my family has been a college athlete.

You can continue deflecting but we all know that it is the insecurity of R1 parents, especially those dreaming of Ivies who keep the SLAC threads going. You can't handle the truth.

I understand the deep butthurt of DCUM parents who always jump into SLAC threads to whine about the “excessive” number of athletes at SLACs. It’s because poor little Ethan got cut from the 8th grade travel team and never made high school varsity.

Thanks for sharing the article. A nice break from the "LACs are overrated" thread that keeps popping up.

LACs might not be the right choice for every kid, but for a lot of students they're terrific undergrad experience. R1 unis are great in other ways, but at them, a lot of the superstar research professors work much more closely with grad students.

I guess the rest of us should consider ourselves fortunate that we are allowed to walk the earth with SLAC graduates

Amazing how the proponents of SLACs make a case against them stronger than their critics

SLAC parents think they're better than R1 parents, but are just ashamed that they have to whip out Google every time they explain to others where their DC attends.

"Look!! Colby has a 7% acceptance rate! Isn't my DC so special and smart?"

News flash: any private school kid with a pulse can get into your SLAC.

This is what happens when the GMU grad VA housewife gets their DC into a SLAC (likely a mid-tier one with an artificially low acceptance rate) and becomes all cocky on DCUM.

In all seriousness, my DC turned down Amherst because of how many athletes there are & how they dominate the social scene. It's ridiculous.
