Will DCPS be closed tomorrow (Wednesday)?

We have a very extensive public transportation system in this city. Schools should be open.

Montgomery and PG are now closed through Thursday, which will mean a lot of DCPS teachers won’t be able to make it in.

Right so those teachers would take leave or make arrangements for their kids. MoCo and PG closing shouldn’t mean DC does too

Most of those bus routes are still not running. Not every student can walk to school.

And when the subs also can’t make it in?

I just finished a long walk through my w4 neighborhood. Cars stuck on pretty much every side street. Spinning out trying to leave spots. I don't see it

I don't think DCPS will be open tomorrow. A lot of side streets aren't plowed. Even on streets that are plowed, only one lane had been plowed leaving about three feet of two foot tall cement like snow to be shoveled. I did my best with my teenage son helping, and we got my car out, but once we were out, things weren't moving very well.

The post office parking lot and the grocery store parking lot were well cleared, but the streets sure weren't. Lot of people were walking in the street and stopped to pick people up or drop off. Not good.

Except that a delay obviously gives everyone 2 additional hours to get to school. Think a delay makes sense tbh

If you need to build in two additional hours to get to school, that probably means it’s not exactly safe to do so. DCPS also is loath to delay opening because if they have to change their minds and call off they day, everyone will roast their indecision.

This all is going to come down to WMATA’s ability to get the bus system back online.

Doesn’t mean it’s unsafe at all. It means it takes longer than usual. Think that’s pretty reasonable in this case, but if not a delay, should open on time. No need to close cause sidewalks are yucky

+1.

My hometown in MA got more than two feet of snow and only had one snow day (Monday). Yes, they have more and better infrastructure than DC, I totally get that ... but they also got WAY more snow and are much more car-dependent. I've lived in DC for a long time now and there's this weird tendency to jump right to cancelling rather than saying, "this is going take longer or be more complex than usual, but that's okay and it's temporary." Why is that?

Closed due to lack of subs.

Now do Boston and Cambridge (both closed today)

The DC side streets are definitely less cleared, but I’ve seen plenty of small sedans driving on them throughout the day. If not drivable, students can walk to a major road and take a bus or metro. If they can’t make it, they’ll just be absent. But schools should be open.

Ok but what if the bus isn’t running, as will almost certainly be the case tomorrow? Not all of us live close to a Metro station.

Closed due to not all buses running.

For a reason I don’t understand DC is unable to clear the snow. Some streets are still not plowed. 3 feet snowbanks are blocking bus stops and crosswalks everywhere. Why can’t they hire people to clear it? Why can’t the national guard pitch in?

+1. Every school division in the area has called it.

I walked to the grocery store today, stepping over snow piles at crosswalks. I survived. Those piles shouldn't keep anyone from going to school.

You climbed over snow piles that are several feet high into a busy road with a five year old? That sounds dangerous. That’s what families would have to do tomorrow. I’m all for kids going back to school tomorrow but the city should take some responsibility and make it safe for them to get there.

Closed due to lack of hustle.
