Spelled with c or k?

Both of their names are spelled with a K, if that's what you're asking.

Carla Bruni begs to differ.

It's spelled both ways. It's more common to see the K in central/Eastern Europe, not that isn't a popular baby name now, though. The C spelling is Western Europe/US/Canada.

Carla used to be the more common spelling in the US, but that changed in the early 1990s. Karla was #730 (out of 1000) on the list of most common names used for babies born in 2024 in the US. Carla didn't even rank in the top 1000. Link below.

This matches my anecdotal experience. The only ones that I've met and/or know of with the C are older Italian-American women from New York/New Jersey. The younger ones all have the K and seem to come from more of a variety of backgrounds - Puerto Rican, Dominican, Mexican, German, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, African-American, etc.

I think you are trying too hard. Hell No to all three.

They’re all cute.

I don’t think “trying too hard” is necessarily always a bad thing. You probably should put some thought and effort into choosing your child’s name. Otherwise you might as well just open a baby name book, close your eyes, and point to a name. Not sure about OP but I’d rather be trying too hard than not trying at all.

I agree. Antonia is like you wanted a boy (Anthony), Karis is just odd and your child and then adult will forever be repeating and spelling it for people, and Carla is correct, Karla comes from a time when parenta went berzerk "let's all be unique and spell our kids names oddly (see Kayleigh, Kaylee, Cailey, Cayleigh, and Kayli to give an example)."

Just don't do this to your kid. You'll see them here in 30-40 years wanting to change their odd name given by their parents

Other than OP's spelling of Karis (it's usually Carys/Charis depending on if you're going for the Welsh or Greek name), these are perfectly normal names. Karla is the Germanic, Scandinavian, and Slavic spelling of Carla. It has also become the popular spelling in Mexico.

Do you want everyone to just name their kids Sophia, Olivia, and Liam? I feel like a lot of people on DCUM think that any name that is out of the top 20 popularity is either too odd or too outdated to use. That doesn't leave parents with a lot of options.

Antonia, followed by Karis / Charis / Carys. Strong dislike of Karla.

Some of you are so F*king dumb it's unreal. The name Karla is a girl's name of German origin. A country in which they don't generally start names with a "C" and then a vowel rather than a K.

I seriously thought it was common knowledge that Karla is a legitimate spelling and not a tragedeigh. I guess my expectations are too high.

Antonia hands down. Book is great and the name is easily pronounced across many cultures and nicknames nicely (like others I like Annie as the nn). I have a very accomplished colleague with this name.

Karis? I actually looked it up and it is a girl's name and means Grace. I suggest that you just call her Grace which is a lovely name and brings up memories of the late Princess Grace of Monaco.

I don't like those names especially the K spellings, sorry. But there's nothing wrong with them. If you like them, then go for it.

I think Catherine Zeta-Jones' daughter is Carys which I actually really like.

"My Ántonia, published in 1918, is a classic American novel by Willa Cather that tells the story of Ántonia Shimerda, a Bohemian immigrant girl, through the nostalgic memories of her childhood friend, Jim Burden, in late 19th-century Nebraska."

Bohemia = part of Czech Republic

I love Willa Cather's books and read them all decades ago. Maybe I'll read them again. It will be like finding as old friend I haven't seen in years.
