Neighbor ran over nail near our trash cans—how should I respond?

We didn’t throw away anything sharp, and our trash was fully contained in our bins, not loose at the curb. You getting a flat tire has absolutely nothing to do with us. It happened on public property on the public street.

Don’t mention you have camera footage. But Save that if they escalate.

OP, this is good advice.

I checked my camera footage and can see them hit something in the street and get a flat. They pull over, get out, inspect it, and then turn around and drive back home. The thing is, we didn’t throw away anything sharp, and our trash was fully contained in our bins, not loose at the curb. It seems like they just unfortunately ran over something that happened to be in the street near our house.

Has anyone dealt with something like this before? How would you respond to a neighbor asking for compensation in this situation?

Good lord. Tell your neighbor to pound sand

I've run over multiple nails in our neighborhood since we moved in 10 years ago, way more than I ever ran over in my previous 15+ years driving, and it never would have occured to me to ask the neighbor(s) where it happened for compensation. SO weird! In my case I think it's more due to ongoing home renovations. I do cringe when I see the contractors sloppily disposing materials in a dumpster on the street and sometimes will change my route to avoid.

Don't say that. Crazy neighbor will read "this has happened to me before" as "I habitually leave nails in my driveway and have run over them before."

It actually is. I've had three this year at $600 or $450 a pop, but I would never as someone for compensation. I found a screw that I almost ran over in CVS the other day. Should I ask CVS for comp?

It is cheap! We run over nails in all of our cars. It’s $35 to patch.

You are luck you don't get them near the sidewall.

Is your tire made of unobtanium?

They CAN patch them near the sidewall and they last just as long.

The places they give you the “too close to the sidewall BS are really BS-ing you in order to sell you a brand new tire.

Next time they give you that BS, just find one of the “Used Tires” places and I guarantee they will patch it for like $20.

DP. Of course it's legit. You're a fool who keeps buying new tires when you don't need to.

There is no fking way this happened. Going over a nail to noticing flat tire takes time. You don’t feel going over a nail. Stay making up stories OP.

Not your issue. Nails usually come from any number of construction or roofers driving about. It’s horrible.

Oh good grief, your experience is not universal. I've had multiple flats over the years and sometimes I felt it, other times I haven't.

I would NEVER compensate your neighbor……most especially since you have actual video footage.

There is no way that this neighbor can prove that it is your fault that there was something hard on the street - - just because this object was near your garbage bins means nothing!!

What nerve of this neighbor to even contact you ➕ mentioning that you are responsible for this!
Simply outrageous in my opinion!!
